Their primes were separated by 80 years. How would a defensive genius in Johnson do against the wrecking machine that was a young Mike Tyson?
Are you ****ing serious? He was a defensive master and frustrated every guy but yes, Tyson probably by ko because the boxing improved a lot since the jack time and Tyson watched every old film from old school guys
Yes I'm being serious. Watch the films of Johnson vs Moran or Johnson vs Willard. They are pretty even and Johnson wasn't that hard to hit. Neither Moran or Willard was skilled. Tyson is very skilled. He's land early and that would be that. Did you know Johnson was out boxed by a 160ish pound man in Jack O'Brien according to some primary sources and drew with a Journeyman in title matches? Both are true.
As great as Johnson was I don't think he'd be competitive against anyone who had the diet, nutrition and conditioning of someone fighting in the 1980s
It seems people on here are under estimating Johnson. He would frustrate Tyson and out box him on his way to a win on points
The Moran and Willard fights should definitely NOT be looked at when judging Johnson's defensive skill. Willard homer simpsoned his way to gas an overweight 37 yr old Johnson and the Moran fight was already fixed to go the full 20 rounds. Not very fair to judge a fighter through footage of them much past their prime IMO while judging Tyson on how he was in his 20s. Not saying Tyson wouldn't win, just an unfair outlook on Johnson.
I think the best Johnson could do is hold and frustrate Tyson for a bit until he gets dropped. Maybe Jack could do it longer than I think, and if it goes past 10 rounds perhaps he could get a decision , but I just can't see him beating Mike at his best.
Marvin Hart shut Johnson down for the 2nd half of the fight. Before that Joe Choynski who was a sharp puncher, Kod; him cold. Ketchel as crude as he was Knocked Johnson down and according to Johnson had him hurt. Then there was Gunboat Smith who though a novice in 1909 ( Johnson's absolute prime ) TKO'd Johnson a a 4 round exhibition match. There you have it, Johnson from age 23-29. None of these four are close to Mike Tyson.
