Quigg looked like a fighter that hadn't fought for years and was damaged. His feet looked clumsy, he stumbled around, he couldn't pull the trigger, he looked slow and sloppy. Quigg has never been the greatest speaker but during the build up and afterwards he sounded damaged. What the hell was he even doing in there? Surely during the camp the signs were there? Joe G just didn't want to be the one to stop it, he let his emotional bond with Quigg cloud his judgement, you know it is bad when your other fighters at ringside are telling you to pull him out. Crolla looked genuinely upset between rounds 10-11, he knew it should have been stopped, Joe G finally made the decision and it was the correct one. Sure Quigg might have survived the final 4-5 minutes but he was miles behind, never looked like winning and was hurt and getting worked over. One or two things give Joe G and a little bit of wriggle room, Quigg was never off his feet, he wasn't constantly hurt and once again we watch a referee neglect his responsibility, the referee could have gone to the corner and said "if you don't show me something I'm going to stop it" and took that decision away from the corner. Anyway, It's done now, Quigg will retire, hopefully Joe G will have learnt a lesson and we can all move on.
Like his fighters, Joe Gallagher is built on the success of Matchroom. Without Matchroom, outside of maybe Callum, non of his fighters (and him for that matter) would have won a world title
Wasn't Liam promoted by Warren when he won his ? Gallagher isn't everybody's cup of tea, stylewise as a trainer or as a man, but he is good at getting the most out of his fighters.
If you had a son wanting to turn pro would you be happy knowing Gallagher hasn’t got a clue regards your son’s health and safety once the first bell goes ???
Gallacher knew unless he never watched Quigg at all in the camp and Eh Day Earn knew the Manchester crowd were about to get a good poking as well.
It doesn’t matter if the other fighter isn’t known as a puncher, it is the accumulative shots that do damage rather than one big shot. If a fighter is clearly out of his depth, and is getting punched in the head a lot, it is the duty of the trainer to protect his fighter’s health. As already mentioned above, there is a life after boxing.
Mediocre? Weren't the 4 Smith brothers and Crolla all ABA champions before training at Tesco's? Did 3 of the Smiths not win medals at the Commonwealth games?
Really good post HOW many times has Gallagher jeopardised one of his fighters health he must realize how dangerous this game is it’s ok the trainer being brave but the consequences could be fatal next time
Gallagher gets abuse because he clearly doesn’t value his fighters health the man is a danger to his fighters and the board need to have a word before someone is seriously hurt
Quigg looked old in that ring. Knew what he should do, but could not compute it quick enough to his body. His team would of known he would struggle. They gave him every chance to spring a victory. Quiggs final hurrah I think. What a great fighter he has been.
