He is technically brilliant though. He just uses a different style that most fundamental boxers are accustomed to. There is a craft to using the shoulder roll as the primary defensive mechanism, although, it won't work against all of your opponents depending on certain circumstances. For instance, if you go in using that method against a taller opponent who likes to get up close, you have to worry about him throwing that right hand over the top, followed by a left hook or uppercut.
Floyd's fights: Genaro Hernandez: This fight was alright. Mayweather was brilliant in it. In terms of action, it was alright. Angel Manfredy: This one ended pretty quick. It was alright while it lasted. Carlos Rios: This fight was rather dull. Justin Juuko: Okay fight. Carlos Gerena: This was a fun beating to watch. Goyo Vargas: Yawn. Emanuel Burton/Augustus: This was a fun fight with a lot of action. Diego Corrales: Brilliant display of boxing. In terms of action it was alright, although extremely one-sided. Carlos Hernandez: It started off entertaining, but got boring when Floyd injured his hand. Jesus Chavez: Good fight, with Chavez throwing non-stop and Floyd countering effectively. Jose Luis Castillo: The first fight was suspenseful, close, and entertaining. The rematch was boring. Victoriano Sosa: So-so fight. The purists would enjoy it, but the action was so-do. Philip Ndou: Fun beatdown to watch. Demarcus Corley: Good fight Henry Bruseles: Okay fight, beating in a terrible mismatch. Arturo Gatti: Fun beatdown to watch. Shambra Mitchell: Okay fight, another mismatch. Zab Judah: Pretty good fight, as Judah started off well, then Mayweather gradually took over with his body attack and straight right hands. Carlos Baldomir: Boorring. Oscar De La Hoya: At the time, people were actually rather pleased at the fight. Maybe it was worry that the fight would be so crappy. Now mostly everyone says it was an awful fight. I say it was a so-so fight. Ricky Hatton: Ugly fight, but not dull. Overall, he's obviously no Saad or Chacon in making great fights but not consistently dull like a Raheem either.
I don't see Mayweather as being that much more dull or defensive in higher weights and that much more great to watch at lower weight classes either. At 130, Mayweather's defense against Goyo Vargas stunk. His fight against Carlos Rios bored me. His rematch at 135 with Castillo was boring. He's had fights above 135 where he was more aggressive, like Corley, or how he was pressuring Judah for most of the fight, and stinkers like Baldomir. He's always had his fun fights to watch as well as boring ones, at the lower and higher divisions.
What is entirely obvious is that its virtually at Mayweather's discretion to decide whether a fight is exciting or not. If he puts together his combinations its fantastic to watch. You can't force him to do that, it depends on styles and seemingly whether he can be ****ed to do it.
I hate to say it, but because Mayweather retired, my interest in the who the winner of the Margarito-Cotto fight has diminished. I now will just watch it for what it is. A good scrap to determine who the second best welterweight in the world is if Mayweather were still around.
He is boring when he is playing it safe. Against Baldo, ODLH, Hernandez he was extremely ridiculously boring. When he was getting tagged by Chavez, Judah, he wasn't, nor was he boring against Gatti, and Hatton.
There is nothing technically brillinat about his hand positioning. There is nothing technically brilliant about the way he ducks out of punches. There is nothing technically brilliant about the way i've seen him retreat in straight lines when he has his opponents hurt/ I agree with most of this. I think that Floyd did have technical ability - I don't think you would have seen him drop off in a dramatic way, like Jones did, when his speed began to betray him - but first and foremost he is wonderful athlete who gets away with blue murder on the technical front.
