I watched the LH, H/W & SHW finals at the Asia & Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament this morning. No wins for our boys but decent performances all round.

LH - Paulo Aokuso faced the World Amateur champ from Kazakhstan & was magnificent. He has tremendous hand speed & head movement. The Kazakh's pressure told in the 2nd & 3rd rounds but Aokuso has enormous potential. This was his first international tournament. They need to keep this guy in the amateurs for another 4 years. He's only 22. He lost a UD but was terrific.

H/W - David Nyika (NZ) faced the Olympic silver medalist from 4 years ago (another Kazakh) & got the better of him in the first. Nyika lost his way a bit after that but closed out the last round with some good right hands. He lost a 4/1 split decision. Certainly not outclassed though.

SHW - Justis Huni was outclassed in the final against the 2019 World Amateur champion Bakhodir Jalolov from Uzbekistan. The positive is that he got better as the fight wore on. A bridging fight against the bloke from Kazakhstan yesterday is something he really needed. He couldn't mount any meaningful offence early but did go close to winning the last round. They need to look at getting him some better sparring & perhaps some more fights in the lead-up to the Olympics. He's not quite where he needs to be going into that tournament in order to be a realistic chance of winning the gold. Not fighting yesterday against the bloke who has made the last two world amateur championship finals was costly in terms of his development, imo. Jalolov was able to fight at range too easily in the early going.

In other news, Alex Winwood won his box-off by SD for an Olympics spot so will be going to Tokyo. Harry Garside lost but we will hopefully send him to Paris to fight in the repechage tournament in May. Harry is frustrating b/c he has the international experience to do well in Tokyo. He lost a SD to the guy who won gold in this tournament & then doesn't go on to qualify himself. Brush this off & stick with it is my advice.

We also qualified two lady boxers for the Olympics - Caitlin Parker & Skye Nicholson (Jamie's younger sister for all you old-timers out there).

Congratulations to all concerned but there's much more work to do if our people are to reach their potential in Tokyo. A good start would be to organise some sparring between Justis Huni & David Nyika in the lead-up to Toyko. They won't win medals if they don't challenge themselves in their training in the lead-up. They also need to find a decent 6"7 southpaw SHW for Justis to spar with. They should spend some money & get Ivan Dychko out here to spar with him for a month in May or June.

Tim Tszyu v Jeff Horn looks to be taking place in Townsville this April.
The fight being in the state of Queensland should still be a major concern for Team Tszyu.

Hearing Jonathan Thurston will be the ref and sole judge.

    Very concerning for Team Tszyu.

The further north you go in Australia, the dodgier things get.

Townsville should be renamed Dodge City.

Junior Tszyu will need to plank him to get the draw.

Couldn't agree more, Tszyu Jnr needs to knock this smug rat down for the count. I believe he can do it but there is a reason Horn wants 10 rounds as there is more of a chance for him to hang on for dear life to hear the final bell.

I didnt even check last night, thought all 3 mentioned bouts would be on tonight...
I watched Aokuso’s 1st 3 bouts, missed semi vs chinese guy and last night...
Someone I hadnt heard of until this past week.... Any more thoughts on him, I was actually quite impressed... At 22yo could have a very decent future in the sport, looks right at home in the ams n looks like could make transition to the pro’s quite easily...

Think everyones mentioned n discected Huni, he’s what, 20,21yo, great experience gained n gives them idea I guess of what to work on... 3x3min rds, can be worked on n improved... Some of these am bouts very close n can come down to judges preference....
I wouldnt have even known this tournament was on apart from all who mentioned it on here, tuned in to see Huni n discovered Aokuso....
Asia standard has been pretty decent (alot Kazakstan) the russian(are they in Errope group) n americas must be tough as to qualify in.... As usual, (not sure which bracket they in) but good luck to whoever has to qualify vs the Cubans....
Its been kinda nice watching decent bouts as opposed to 4mth build up in pros..
(Im already sick of hearing about horn vs tszyu, just want to watch) Sick of hearing about Gallon, Barry Hall, Mark Hunt etc, etc
Anyone else have thoughts on Aokuso...
The uk coach the Aussies have seems to know his stuff (stating the obvious here)
    Congrats to all who qualified.....

Also, just read the Americas quallifying (nth, sth, central america plus carribian (CUBA) scheduled to take place in Argentina has been cancelled!!!!!!!! Due to corona virus, or containment of in Argentina (Im guessing article I just read at scene should really have said postponed) They looking for a new venue etc which Im sure they’ll find...
Sure it’ll work itself out, gonna be some damn good boxers at that box off scheduled for Paris (Im assuming UK is in European with Russia n rest of Europe)
I think Olympics will go ahead, if they didnt due to this corona virus, its the only time apart from WW1 n 2 they been cancelled, thats the bit I cant comprehend....

so much for people here calling a spade a spade huh?

For what its worth, who’s bagging Horn? Half a dozen, a dozen ppl on here....
I rarely bag any fighters, my last few post I wrote “I BELIEVE managers, promoters, commisions should be held accountable”
Not the fighters (A few cases yes) but not this....
I follow most Aussie fighters where I can...
I watch Horn, watched Geale, watched a little of Green, watched FEW Mundine fights I believed were worth it....
If anyone else wants to support or bag any fighter’s not my business....
I do like how u can read here n pick up on something I missed or “industry whispers”
Is how I found out about am qualifiers being on this past week....
I do 100% agree with u that if made Zerafe v Mundine is criminal, (as do most responces previous 2-3 pages in this thread)
in Zerafas defence he did have Mundine tell him he’d still whoop him at some public thing, if he says Im not fighting u cause u too old they’d say he scared, if he calls him out he cant win either..
Im my view, ITS MANAGEMENT, PROMOTERS n COMISSIONS that should be held accountable....
Zerafa’s who carear has been a mis management, guess he looking for $...

I dont much like the footy players fights so i just dont watch, easier than complaining, I did see Gallon v Hall as I wanted to watch Moloney bros, sometimes, n it may not be right, but u just gotta take it for what it is..

If Zerafa v Mundine made Id actually be cheering for Mundine which is rare for me.

Anyway enjoy the fights n all best to our Aussie boys...

Im planning on posting something maybe next week which Im going to encourage anyone who has watched any Aussie boxers at length to contribute their thoughts on.....

    As stated, enjoy the fights...

horn geys bagged because he's a liar and dirty cheating fighter he brings it on himself, Mundine got bagged because his mouth in reality hes a far more skilled boxer than horn or zerafa by a country mile
