The fury - McDermott 1 result gave Frank maloney a heart attack then he got a sex change. Must have been some robbery

Cunningham complained about it vociferously after the fight. Both he and his trainer kicked up a big stink about it. The irony of Richardson complaining about dirty tactics couldn't have been anymore priceless given how he was the longtime trainer of the most filthy dirty fighter in the game in B-Hop.

Cunningham even weighed in on the Glovegate conspiracy nonsense just the other day accusing Fury of cheating. There's some irony to be found in that too because it's something he's been accused of before. Something to do with tampering with the thumb part of the glove and thumbing numerous opponents in their eyes. I'm not saying there's any validity to this either but I remember reading a thread about it on another forum years ago.

yeah they were reaaaaal salty after the fight. Was embarrassing.

then he grew to accept he went 7 rounds with a king.

now this stupid glove thing has done the rounds he’s getting salty. He has a touch of the jermain Taylor’s about him

It nearly kicked off between the two teams at the post-fight presser

Yeah I thought they were cool with each other after Tyson had him in camp for sparring which is why it came as a surprise when I heard Cunningham start spouting that utter and easily disprovable nonsense about the gloves the other day

Right. I'm a big Hopkins fan, but nobody can vouch for Bernard and then cry about another fighter employing the dark arts of boxing (which are a part of the game too many fans alternately cry about and turn a blind eye to depending on whom they're cheering for – the corrupt refereeing that allows flagrant, unsophisticated fouling exhibitions such as Mares-Agbeko I to occur is another matter entirely).

I've been in the immediate social presence of Naazim, and he's a paranoid weirdo. Fury talking that windbag glorified snake oil salesman down and stunning him to silence is one of my favorite out-of-ring boxing memories. (Hopkins, by contrast, is a complete gentleman.)

 It's astonishing how oblivious Richardson was to the irony of it

Cunningham is a bit of a paranoid weirdo by all accounts too according to some of the stuff his posts on his social media albeit I've not personally seen any of it myself

It was the rematch. I genuinely thought he might go home and hang himself that night, with his post-fight interview as my criterion. He looked utterly crushed. Turned out I was kinda close, since he suicided his masculinity.

If you watch the whole fight you will notice how biased the commentary is towards McD. The Scottish guy was ridiculous. This helped form the narrative of the robbery. The commentary would ignore stretches of work by Fury, including a large amount of body punching, and then celebrate whatever McD did, even if it was to no real effect. McD was perhaps crisper in general, but Fury applied a lot of voliume. So it was a close fight and Fury finished stronger. It's understandable some score it for McD, but it's a myth it was a blatant robbery, more to do with hatred of Fury. The rematch was a good idea under the circumstances and Fury won convincingly.

The McD beat Fury narrative is at least better than the Wallim beat Fury narrative. Because Wallin lost most rounds and simply landed a lucky can opening punch together with some dirty fouling to make it a blood bath. The Cunningham complaints were pathetic, they just couldn't handle the fact a big white guy KO'd them after disrespecting his skills. Cunningham was badly hurt before the final blow where his head was levered up, he would have been finished anyway and manhandling an opponent to set up a punch is hardly uncommon. It wasn't like Fury hit Cunningham while down, or in the back of the head, or in the balls, or butted him or ripped open a cut, all things people are quite fine with in boxing when it suits them. They say, 'it's a fight, not a tickling contest' and so on.

Agreed. The fight's reputation as a robbery is a matter of great overstatement. I don't bother arguing with Fury-bashers about it, though. It was 2009, Tyson was a baby and he sparked John just a few months later.

I also concur on the Wallin narrative that some peddle.

Truthfully, he knocked Steve down with the headshot, but the uppercut to the solar plexus was the KO punch. Steve was in the process of rising from the headshot when he got that 'being stretched out on a rack' sensation and physically couldn't complete the sit-up.

I'm not sure that Barrera was ever described in terms like "clumsy", "oaf", "unathletic", "garbage", "trash", "rubbish", "useless" or "bum" (to name some of the kinder ones applied to Fury).

With that said, I don't think Fury has made the kind of unforseeable quantum leaps that some are attributing to him; his 'improvement' is more the typical kind that comes with seasoning and better preparation. He always had the goods, many just couldn't perceive it. One thing I will say is that Fury learns like a sponge absorbs; he's bounced around many trainers and will have taken something away from every union, however brief.
