Earnie Shavers would stand a good chance against past prime Joe Louis of the Walcott fight, but remember Earnie was kayoed by Jerry Quarry in round 1, on Dec 14 1973, in Madison Square Garden. This means that Shavers has tremendous power on his side, but a clever Louis realizing this, would probably jump all over Earnie for fear of that atomic power that floored the likes of prime Larry Holmes. Another tactic would to drag Shavers into the later rounds, as stamina issues plagued Earnie, remember the Ali fight on Sept 29 1977 bout when he almost fell in round 15, very exhausted. Louis as aged as he was, would jump all over Shavers, and landing that lethal right hand.
YOU STILL CAN'T QUOTE PROPERLY WHAT THE **** Fam. Shavers wouldn't be a top 5 Louis win. Boxing hasn't actually moved on that much since the 30s. And if it has, Shavers ain't the poster boy for it. God give me strength if you actually think Shavers was better than Schmeling, Charles, Walcott or Marciano. God give me more if you actually believe that last paragraph. You clearly no next to nothing about boxing fundamentals. Go to a gym, and learn some.
Then why do the best fighters use those same techniques today? So what has been developed since Louis's time? I would be genuinely interested to know! Those men were all outstanding boxers, who were far better from a technical standpoint, than most of the current top ten. Obviously Louis was green when Schmeling beat him, shot when Charles beat him, and held Conn and Walcott on more or less even terms! That is because most of the top black contenders of his day, were simply not as good as the best white contenders of his day. Guys like Franklin, Bivins, and Ray, were not quite as good as Farr, Nova, Conn, or Pastor. Walcott was outstanding, but I doubt that Louis ducked guys like Franklin and Bivins when he was young, but agreed to fight Walcott when he was old!
No he wasn't. Jerry Quarry iced him in one round ffs! He lost to some total non entities! He would have beaten some of Louis's beat opponents, based upon his power, but he would have had some embarrassing losses along the way!
He played with Toney he wanted to drag it out by his own admission and when he got caught he decided his power was too risky and gave him a beating that would kill most men.
If you believe in this, then you'd never say this: How can it be that boxing became so much better in 30 years between 1940s and 1970s, but now it's worse, after 50 years of evolution? It doesn't make any sense.
Louis had a good chin even if not iron. Schmeling stopped a poorly prepared well fornicated Louis after hitting him with a gazillion right hands. Sure he had some flash KD's but man did he come back from them. When Baer hit him HARD with a combo he almost beheaded him seconds later. Louis has a solid chin even if it's not in the class of Ali.
Joe Louis had a lot of great things but the chin was not one of them(but he did not have glass chin). Foreman for example had much better chin than Louis when both men are not gassed. Tyson,Ali,Holyfield, vitali klitschko, all them had better chin than Louis
Foreman had a great chin but by the same token Lyle did drop him hard. Like Holmes, Louis recuperated very quickly. He could behead you when you came after him.
