It being Liston's 7th fight doesn't matter? Liston fighting with the handicap of a broken jaw and only losing a split dec is irrelevant too I suppose? Marshall ko'd Satterfield in 2 rds flooring him 4 times,Id say that was pretty convincing. Machen, the third ranked heavyweight goes the distance with Liston, shock horror! Sonny must be **** then!
No I don’t think so. These interviews are historically important and would not exist without that article. The second article, the one debunking “the four who baffled Liston” (probably deliberately) inaccurately describes Burt whitehurst as “pitifully unskilled”. Which simply does not stand up on any front what so ever. You couldn’t get away with saying that nowadays because of the access to film on YouTube. Burt Whitehurst was not unskilled.
There is nothing wrong with Liston being baffled in fights he still won. All fighters get baffled even Liston. Sonny found Marshall and Whithurst baffling. Nothing wrong with that. Even the last time they fought, in Listons 14th fight, Marshall drew blood from Sonny. Jimmy Jordon, Pittsburgh post Gazette March 7 1956 “Marshall backing up most of the fight, did manage to land a few wild lefts and rights, all haymakers, high on Listons head as he fought with the finesse of an octopus reaching for its prey, but the only apparent damage he inflicted was a slight trickle of blood from the left nostril and a bit of blood from the lower lip of Liston.”
Sonny also Fought Marshall in his 14th fight. Even though Liston soundly beat Marshall He was described as “plodding” and “predictable” going the distance with a much smaller man. Probably because Sonny was still baffled by Marshall.
And this is exactly the problem. Anyone pointing out that Liston could be “baffled” is equated to saying hes **** by his deluded fanboys who think he walked on water. I would just add that anyone overly impressed by a stoppage of Bob Satterfield might want to check Satterfields record first to see just how many times he was defeated (and stopped) and by whom. The weight you place on that one victory might need to be readjusted...
Marshall was a ranked top ten fighter. Can you name some other greats who fought a ranked fighter in their 7th pro fight? How about Tyson? Ali? Frazier? Whiteshurt lost 19/20 rounds. How in the hell did he baffle Liston?! "Cleveland Williams all but knocked Liston out" That's all one needs to read to know that this article is absolute bollocks!
Sorry you couldn't go to the Dominican Republic. I myself am planning a trip there in the near future. But you're right it's not worth the risk. Glad you're all right friend!
You said you were leaving the board. 100% called that out as BS. As for the article its a very old one. The author of the Four who Baffled Liston has his share of points along with some bunk. What I say is this. Put the four who baffled Liston in with Foreman or Tyson, or any other big time puncher, and they are meat. Yet Liston has his issues. Why? Whitehurst and Machen are on film. Liston throws low blows un-purpose vs Machen, who clearly bothered him with counters. In the Whitehurst match, Sonny almost knocks him out. Whitehurst was just very game and crawled back form outside the ropes to finish the fight. Whitehurst went the distance with Liston...twice.
What was the score card in Liston vs. Summerlin, the re-match which ended in a split decision? While the first fight was broadcast, I don't think the second one was. Maybe Klompton can clarify that. Summerlin, who was a solid guy wet the distance with Liston twice.
I can't find anything about the 2nd fight strangely enough. Only that it was an SD in Liston's favor. Will have to check further.

From the Detroit Times, Liston was a pretty clear winner of the second fight, it was just the referee's maverick scorecard that made it a split. https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/y25/Soldeed/0/Detroit_Times_1954-08-11_24.png
