I do disagree that Frazier was a particularly small heavyweight. Like Norton, he bent down a LOT, which made him appear smaller right off.

I also think Joe's tree trunk legs had a lot to do with his power. He didn't have a whole bunch of upper body strength. Watch his greatest hooks, he's definitely bending his knees, those shots came up from his feet. Just a picture perfect hook.

He even lept in with his left foot more than once while throwing the hook, watch the Ali knockdown, the whole side of his body was in that punch.

There is something in baseball called "batlag", where as you swing you turn your body ahead of the bat, hence the bat lagging behind.
Seemed like Frazier took this idea with hooks, probably unintentionally, to create amazing power.
