With both Whitaker and R Mayweather having passed away I thought it would be honorable to take a look back at their classic fight. Whitaker was still green with only 11 fights but he already showed grit and toughness against a dangerous veteran like Mayweather. Both also disliked each other at the time. Highly skilled, entertaining, competitive, and sometimes dirty. Both exchanged KDs and got hurt, with Whitaker beating Mayweather by decision in a great scrap. Enjoy! This content is protected
The ref also gets accidentally hit by Whitaker, showing a good chin himself! You can see the venom from Whitaker’s punches, he did NOT like Mayweather at the time.
This was a fun fight, both guys going for it! When I boxed in the amateurs I like to think that boxed a similar way to Roger mayweather.
Sad to think both are gone at rather young ages. I was watching Pryor vs. Arguello the other day and realizing both of them are now gone.. After the second fight seeing how warm they were to each other showed something great about boxing. The respect.
Great fight, although one-sided except for the KD. Questionable scores, despite the KD. I thought Sweet Pea was on control of nearly every round except for the KD round. Great heart shown by both fighters. It’s amazing a 23 year old with only 11 fights could have that kind of composure. RIP to both men. Thanks for the reminder of a time when boxing was so much more enjoyable (and free to watch). I miss those day’s.
That was a solid scrap. Crazy they shared the ring like that not knowing they would both die in their 50s.
Early in his career Whitaker was thought to have a questionable chin. He answered those questions by not getting hit on the chin for years at a time.
