Quartey took plenty of the mid-rounds by a whisker, very decent fight with a superb final round. No problem with a win for either. Going to watch Sahaprom-Nishioka 1-4 then onto Marquez-Vasquez 1-4 in the future.

 

I was also scoring it as apart of Larry Holmes, the Thread. Meaning I was focusing on Larry, so I was probably a little generous.

But yeah, in no way was this a 11-4 type fight. Normally, I'm quite submissive with my Holmes cards, not in a bias way, but I don't think he stiffed anybody through his title run or think he was robbed by Spinks in the first fight.

 

From what I've seen, great fights aside from the finale's.

 

After watching I’m going to try and watch other world champion Asian fights, any suggestions?

Deuk-Koo Kim was in a truly tragic, albeit excellent fight with Ray Mancini. I also enjoyed watching Shoji Oguma today. His first fight with Park was awesome.

That should be some insane viewing. If you really wanna get into it, you should probably find Fleaman's website, or speak to Rough, Philly or McGrain. I'm not an expert. They are.

 

Yaegashi is one of the most fun fighters for me, puts everything on the line. I’ve seen plenty of the late 2000s-2010s Japanese fights soon after they were live but not much outside: Kameda, Hasegawa, Nishioka, ect.

Naoto Takahashi is the guy for asian brawls. Seriously, the best action fights ever from Asia or even in general. I had an old thread on his insane fight with Noree Jockygym.

Lots of respect given early on. It was, largely, an awesome fight. And another to check out if you like, @cornwall22. Since Boris had his statement, I got distracted around round 13, and scored it in parts. Either way, I don't know what to make of this decision; on the one hand, I didn't agree with it and the overall feel of it was that Oguma won. Whilst on the other, there were a fair few rounds which could've been given either way and so a draw/win for González isn't out of the question.

My indecisiveness is probably a good indication why this was a draw. Decision aside; this was an amazing fight between two unheralded greats at their peaks.

Oguma had this one in the bag early on. It was competitive, but Oguma was dictating everything and the one doing the damage on offence. However, González has been a slow-starter from what I've seen(although it's only 3 fights, including this one), and he started to have increasing levels of success as the contest carried on. Towards the end, he started throwing his right hand more, and when he did he started winning rounds more. You'd think he'd have learnt this earlier on given their two previous fights.

1969-06-23, NYSAC HW Title

I mentioned it in the best HW fights thread, and thought "**** it, why not?". So here am I rewatching it! A tad more one-sided than I recall, still an amazing fight, though. Certainly worthy of FOTY, or at least being a candidate. Tbh though, the only round you could make a convincing case for Quarry taking was the first. I had it 7-0.

This wasn't a case of styles perse, as Jerry and Joe don't really do particular things to bother eachother. It was a styles issue though since Jerry shouldn't have trading up-close with Joe. But then again, what else was he gonna do? The disparity in ability between them was what made the it a bad style for Quarry. Not the actual style.

Either way, Joe was as great as it gets, and Jerry was awesome too.

Frazier wasn't nearly as one-dimensional as advertised. He showed a larger arsenal here, stunning Jerry with an overhand right in the third and going to body effectively with either hand. He also used a jab a little to get inside, and when he was forced back in the first showed no qualms fighting off the ropes. Despite only weighing 203, he looked pretty flabby here. Obviously as well conditioned as they come.

I'd actually quite like to @RulesMakeItInteresting's take on this. I know you're a huge Frazier fan(as am I) but I've never seen you talk about this one.

Another amazing fight. I can only hope the 2nd fight surfaces, as this was an awesome series. Scoring was that hard, but I wasn't putting too much thought into it. That cut was baddddd. I don't actually have much to say, just that this was an incredible fight and you should all watch it.

Both of these guys, particularly Park, have incredibly fan-friendly styles.
