He had a quack doc as part of his camp who decided - based on observation alone, no lab work - that Ali's thyroid was malfunctioning and prescribed him a med called Thyrolar that affected his metabolism. That was bad enough, but Ali thought they were like vitamins and took more than the prescribed dose. If there was a bigger recipe for disaster - Ali's poor health to begin with, coupled with a misdiagnosis, invalid prescription and subsequent overdose - I can't imagine it.

I remember reading something like this a while ago. I’m also sure they were giving him another drug, forget what it was which was also f****** him up.
    It’s a sad story.

No. Dundee wasn't the alcoholic Pacheco.

Shouldn’t the question be whether Ali should have walked away from boxing? He had the medical info and he made his choice.

Whether Dundee and Pacheco were part of it or not, he was going to keep fighting. His life and his choice.

Whether Pacheco was an alcoholic or not, he walked and Dundee didn't.

If you had a family member who was a drug addict and he asked you to help him administer those drugs ,would you comply or walk away?

But Pacheco isn't one of them. Ali was being beaten up by Witherspoon in sparring. He didn't belong anywhere near a boxing ring.

Pacheco sent him the results of tests that showed his kydneys were not filtering properly, his cognizant tests were poor too.

I realise that Mac, he chucked it in after the Shavers fight.
What I’m saying is that from arriving in Vegas until the fight Ali although shot, still deteriorated even further.
I might try to dig out the piece I read it was a while ago and post it.
    It makes distressing reading.

Great view on the Ali-Spinks thing, though Ali was really faded by the time he first fought Spinks.

(Ferdie Pacheco talking in the vid)

I agree with Pacheco, I think Ali should have quit boxing after Manila. The VERY LATEST would be after the second Spinks fight, but that's me being a greedy fan and wanting him to be the first 3x heavyweight champ. For his personal health, a retirement after Manila would be ideal.
Ali was one tough man, man.

I thought Bundini was the alcoholic. Didn't he pawn Ali's championship belts, and Ali forgave him? There were definitely some characters in the Ali circus.

I think Dundee was also the person who can be heard frantically screaming "STOP IT! STOP THE FIIIIIIGHT!!!" during Foreman-Frazier I.

Maybe. Or maybe Angelo walking would have been the wake up call he needed. He had much love for Angelo. If Angelo told him he wasn't good enough any more, maybe it would have hit him that he really wasn't
