Walker was definitely a brawler. He didn't use a jab and led with rights and left hooks swinging from the hips. Mayweather would see them coming a mile off. The press reported the Tiger Flowers fight was a robbery btw I'm not sure how you can pick someone as basic as Walker someone who struggled with technical boxers with all of his losses he has against the best boxer of a more advanced era.
Something that I find either very amusing or very sad... There are people that enjoy going on boxing forums to talk rudely and disrespectfully to people until they get banned, then they go and make up new username and do it again. And again and again. It looks poor, but that’s how it was back then. It was like a game of tag to loosen up. Obviously they didn’t fight like that though. Nobody can seriously believe that he beat guys like Walker and Tunney fighting like that. I’ve seen older fighters shadow boxing and it looks ridiculous. But they’re stretching out more than what they are in punching to try and replicate a fight. Greb’s record is truly extraordinary. And although we haven’t got any actual fight footage of him, we have footage of the guys who he beat, as well as various detailed reports from the writers and the fighters of the time.
Harry Greb is a nostalgist hoax. Maybe if he came from a more exotic ethnicity I could go along for the ride. But you’re telling me that guy is a p4p legend up there with names like RJJ, FMJ, and SRR? Get out of my face. Don’t be silly. Go and watch Jack Tunney fight. This guy beat Jack Tunney despite being a 5’8 MW. His record is there for all to see and it can’t be denied. He could never have beaten the guys he did fighting like in the video. It was just for fitness.
He lost to the best boxers that were much bigger than him. Loughran was bigger than Floyd, so was Rosenbloom, Shmeling was heavyewight and Risko wasn't a boxer. He also lost to Greb (another bigger and better fighter than Floyd), Latzo (he also beat him) and Dundee. The rest losses are out of his prime. Walker wasn't basic, he just wasn't a pure boxer. He lost to bigger (sometimes much bigger) men than himself. Floyd wouldn't even try to to fight most of Mickey's best competition.
Of course he didn’t fight like that. We have detailed testimony to how he fought. If he’d have really fought like that, a guy like Jack Tunney would have killed him. Seriously, look into his career. It’s incredible.
I’ve seen two year olds with better fundamentals. Who cares if he beat Tunney? Tunney was a racist. Sure he kiiiinda looks good on film. But that was back in the old days when the world was in black and white and people moved at an inconsistent frame rate.
Don’t be silly. I’m 40 years old. For years and years I thought that Ray Robinson was the GOAT. But after studying Greb’s career, I don’t think he was.
Before you make a statement like that, you need to delve into his career. Look at the guys he beat. Look at the footage available of those guys. Look at who those guys fought and beat. Look at the reports of some of his fights. Read eye witness accounts from respectable people of the time. This guy had an incredible resume, and he beat a guy who beat Dempsey and held his own against Dempsey himself in sparring.
You’ve got to pretty ignorant to think that he’d have beaten the guys who he did by literally fighting like he did in the above video.
