Thoughts on the Goosens?

I liked them. Joe was great with Chico.

 

I always liked Joe.

He was always so stylish looking in the corner.

 

Joe is a good trainer.

 

Good guys. Joe is a hell of a trainer although Corrales is the only one that really stands out in my mind now...

 

Dan is solid, Joe is good but Retief’s the best of the bunch.

 

James Toney had a great respect for Dan Goosen, never had a bad thing to say about him.

I always liked both of them. They had an arrogance of the 1980s, but they also seemed pretty loyal and seemed to do the best for their fighters.

They kind of appeared out of nowhere with the Ruelas brothers and Michael Nunn. Got them a lot of television exposure. Turned them into champions. Then Nunn decided he wasn't making enough money. And it all seemed to fall apart for a while.

It's kind of sad it all ended for Dan and Andre Ward. The Ward situation seemed to play out just like the Nunn situation did. They got Ward in the Super Six. He won. Then wanted a new manager because he thought he wasn't making enough money. This time Dan didn't survive. Cancer killed him.

We hear all the "horror" stories about managers who take advantage of fighters, but we don't here enough about fighters who were nobodies when they signed with a manager, and then don't appreciate the moves the manager made or how far the manager brought them the moment a "rapper" or some other idiot who decides he wants to get into the business shows up with a wad of cash.

 

What happened with the Ward/Goosen situation?

 

Long story short, Ward won the Super Six. Then he wanted out because the Super Six didn't pay a lot compared to the guys he was fighting. Then Goosen got him a fight with Dawson on HBO. Ward won. But Ward wasn't happy and wanted Jay-Z to be his manager. Goosen had a contract with him and hadn't done anything wrong. So Goosen said no. Then Ward wanted Jay-Z to be his co-manager and have Goosen split his manager cut with Jay-Z. Goosen said no. They went to court three times. Goosen won all three times. Ward refused to fight if he couldn't have Jay-Z. Then Goosen died of cancer while they were still fighting it out in court. And, after Goosen died, Ward signed with Jay-Z.

 

Okay. Tricky one, Ward should have been more careful when he signed his contract to ensure he had options to change but Goosen was not in the wrong so I don't blame him. Ward is a funny character at times though.

 

Good trainers, but I can't stand Joe on the mic during fights as a broadcaster. Him paired with Lennox Lewis on some cards is just downright bad.
