There was more to this win than Jones being shot, could Tarver have been dangerous for a prime Jones? This content is protected
Possibly. Tarver was a tall southpaw with a great amateur pedigree and good skills and technique. Roy would be a heavy favorite prime for prime though.
Have you hit your prime yet, Mark? Or will this be the year that we see the best of Mark Ant, poster of 10,000 threads?
At least Mark seems genuinely interested in learning about the sport and considering new opinions and ideas. I wish a whole lot more of us were like that.
Just got him on the right night. Tarver was a very solid fighter. No shame in losing to him at what should have been the end of his career
Thought he never should have given him a rematch till he had another warm up fight or so. Moving up and down in weight looked like it sapped a lot out of him. He was never the same.
The most dangerous opponent for great fighter, is often the one who becomes obsessed with them. When somebody wants to beat you more than they want the title, and prepares them self accordingly, then you have a big problem on your hands!
Who got humiliated in the first round? Jones was getting caught even before this punch, Roy hadn`t landed much either.
Antonio Tarver would always have caused Roy issues. The shot he landed was absolutely perfect. He had his eyes closed, but you've got to give him huge credit. But the surprising thing, is that he couldn't land this shot in the other 2 fights. And Roy was drained in the first one and was washed up for the final one.
WTF? How masny punches did Jones land in the first round, it was a cagety start with hardly any punches landed! Tarver wass landing his jab a bit and Jones missed a number of counter hooks, it was a tentative feeling out start for both men!
Roy got caught because his defense was based on reflex’s which of course slowed down with age. He got KOed because he was a natural 160 fighting a natural 175 pounder. On top of that Tarver used his advantages and reached Roy with a perfect shot.
This is just isn't true. Prime RJJ drained down like 15lbs to get to 160. He also peaked at 168. Jones wasn't a natural 160lber by any stretch. Tarver was also a massive LHW, not a naturally fitting one. But that's by the by.
