I gave him 4, but had another a swing round. So that's makes more sense. Sure it's not the best fight ever, and maybe not even the best of last year, but was definitely good.
Oh, it was good. I didn't think it was FOTY material which is the context of it being overrated. Seems like Donaire exceeding expectations meant a lot. People seeing Inoue as mortal. I understand why it was championed so heavily.
When people think of Marvin Hagler they think of the guy from the Hearns fight ..but he almost never fought that way ...he was more of a technician...I was almost disappointed when I began to study film of him ...I was expecting him to fight like Evander Holyfield
I had Taylor/Prograis as my FOTY, with Donaire/Inoue at #2. I think most people realise that Inoue isn't unbeatable, there just isn't anyone around his weight to pull it off.
I liked Taylor/Prograis a lot. Thought Prograis falling alseep in the middle dampened it a bit. Had Prograis up on my card, but expected a loss after he gave those rounds away. Figured not everybody gave him the first 4 on that body work. Taylor-Ramirez could be another amazing fight. Used to think Taylor was a boxer-puncher. Him turning into a grindy Froch type surprised me. Not sure that bodes well if/when he moves to 147. Inoue's career is kind of tragic so far. Didn't land any of the big names at 115 during that resurgence. Jumped in the WBSS only for Burnett to get injured and Tete to drop out. If Donaire losses to Oubaali, which isn't out of the question, that win won't even look as good. Hope he can get Rigo. At least he'll get in those torch passing fights. I don't think very highly of his contemporaries, but it'd be nice if he could fight the notable ones. Oubaali even should he beat Donaire.
I agree with the Leonard - Hearns I. Was not a great fight in the sense of great exchanges. Two great fighters, sometimes cannot get all of the punches in that they would normally. I would add Duran - Leonard I. It is epic in importance and quite possible the most skill in the ring at one time, but in terms of punches landed, it was not an all time great fight. Too much skill. Yet I love to watch it. I haven’t watched those other fights you referenced so perhaps I should. But, I could never condone adding a Gatti - Ward I to any overrated conversation in any context. Simply put you may never see so much courage in a 10 round again. The outcome of the fight made no difference, both guys won.
Hagler V Hearns is not overrated, IMO. Thrilla in Manilla definitely is, though. I generally hype it up more than it needs to be too. Never thought that Gatti-Ward 1 was all that it is hyped up to be.
A few hipster choices here. Gatti-Ward overrated? If every fight was like this boxing would be the most popular sport on the planet. Sensational fight. Ditto Manilla. Bowe-Holyfield 1 is overrated. One sensational round, some great exchanges and courage from both men but it wasn’t close. Bowe probably took it 9-3 and by and large dominated the fight. Frazier-Quarry 1. Won fight of the year in 1969 but aside from a brilliant, slugfest in round 1, Frazier kicked Jerry’s arse. Leonard-Duran 1 was a significant fight and an amazing achievement by Roberto but not that great from an aesthetic standpoint in my opinion.
Hagler vs. Hearns? I don't any first round could match that fight. Those guys came to hurt each other.
JMM vs Diaz 1. Won FOTY but there were so many better fights from that year like Maidana vs Ortiz, Rhodes vs Moore, Segura vs Canchilla
Leonard Duran 1? I guess the point of this topic is to bash great fights. It almost seems wrong to do this.
