A great man, I was really happy when I met him at my school, he provided us with a truck load of ice cream, and we watched him fight Rocky Marciano on film.
That sounds awesome... If Michael Spinks came to mine school (if I end up going back) and I got to eat ice cream and watch him fight Holmes I'd be over the moon.
Both BHOP and Mayweather have done a lot to help fighters out that are down on their luck. I know when Rhoshi Wells was killed Floyd gave a bunch of money to help his family. Roy Jones was helping out Gerald's sister with his medical needs. I would love to see some sort of union or commission that looks out for fighter's needs but I just don't see it happening. I know John McCain was pushing for it when he was alive.
Thanks for the info, I did not know that but that was a really good thing that those all time greats did. I do feel the same way, fighters in their later years should be cared for.
Being a Manchester lad you could ask Carl Thompson. Carl's original mentor, Phil Martin, was one of the first ex Boxers to go into schools and talk to the most vulnerable and disturbed kids, (That's not a reference to you George). Is the Phil Martin Centre still in Moss Side ? A fitting tribute to a superb fella. Always given it a nod of respect driving past it on the way into the City.
I see Matthew Hatton 3 times a week, most weeks (before quarantine) and I'm hoping to ask him to meet Ricky and see if I can get in touch with Micky Gomez.
If Phil Martin was still alive he'd probably advise you to avoid Gomez ! I doubt we'll see the opening of a Michael Gomez Centre !
Hagler and Leonard invested well and knew where to spend it. Duran and Hearns not as good. if we look at the fab 4. Hearns really was terrible. He talked about being smart with money and then he promoted fights like Tyson vs. Golota trying to be too big too fast. He should have tried small promotions and worked up to bigger ones. That way he loses less and learns the promoting game and that is how you are successful putting in the hard work needed. Looking for the big cash in with a big promotion is a risk.. He hardly has any money now. It is not a criticism as much as why couldn't he hold onto more. When I see people who had money and lose it all like Hearns did I don't feel as sorry for them as someone who never had it and didn't have the opportunities. And it was not like he won the lottery and lost it all from not knowing, he earned money for many years and still didn't learn about it as it came. If he got millions now he would lose it all again.
Jack Dempsey made and kept a lot of money. I wonder how Evander Holyfield is doing, is he supporting his 27 children? He had to sell a huge mansion some years back. George Foreman is loaded, made tens of millions on that grill that is hell to clean.
Packey McFarland earned well in purses and was extremely smart and successful. After boxing, he joined the Illinois Athletic Commission, part owner in a brewery, managing director of 2 banks. estimated net worth in today's money around 100 million Unfortunately, Hearn's lost everything
