Special thread for @Pat M, who wrote this:

So let me know what do you think about Schmeling. Here are some of his best performances filmed:

Again, I don't ask if Schmeling was a boxing genius, I want to know if you agree that he had no skills at all.

I read somewhere before the first fight with Joe Louis, Max Schmeling said that he noticed that Joe did have a tendency to drop his guard when throwing a punch, Max said that is how he kept tagging Louis with the right hand. Max appeared very astute to have noticed that, so he studied him well.

Maybe the most moronic post ever. Schmeling was one of the most intelligent, calculating fighters ever. What r u guys on?

Pat M put him in the same sentence with Galento and Baer brothers.

Definitely not. He was a scientific fighter especially for his time. The reason he beat Joe Louis the first time was from watching films of Louis's fights.

That goes too far. In therms of boxing, he looked more systematic than both of them.
But as stated in the poll, for me he looked extremely limited downwards (Walker) as upwards (Max Baer).
Meeting (arguably prime) Louis on the wrong night made him terribly overrated H2H. But that brings us to the general Louis H2H eval. again, asking:

"Who the fukk of Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe, Lewis, Klits would bother with this guy??"

I wouldn´t even see him trouble CW Holyfield, Ken Norton, HW Michael Spinks, Witherspoon, CW Usyk, CW Haye etc....

I'd have to go back and find it in the thread but I thought he was talking about Baer and not Schmeling. I don't want to speak for him but my impression was he just was talking about the style of fighters that he appreciates which is not an awkward slugger like Baer. Big difference between Schmeling and Baer. I personally don't care for Baer that much either. I simply don't like to watch him fight for the same reason I don't like watching Deontay Wilder.

Schmeling on the other hand was a smart fighter and especially good in that era. Any one that has a win over Joe Louis can fight.

He dominated Walker easier than any other heavyweight did. What are you talking about?
Really? Most posters here don't rank him highly h2h, even though he has deep resume outside of Louis fight.
Most of these fighters lost to worse fighters than Schmeling.
That's not what this thread is about, but it's strange to think that he would not even trouble some of these guys.

He criticized Schmeling a lot in many threads, because he used Baer fight as the only example of how Schmeling fought. He admited that he didn't watch any other Schmeling fight and he said many times that Schmeling couldn't box.
