I scored it a draw. For all the hype about De La Hoya’s “masterpiece”, he lost the 4th round clearly and ran the last four badly, clearly going to Tito so there’s 5 rounds. 115-113 is plausible but so is 114-114. De La Hoya stunk it out and got what he deserved IMO.
I tend to agree. There were a few rounds of the first 6 tito could have nicked plus the back 4 I think a draw is plausible but a loss is beyond the realm for me but he kinda reaped what he sowed
I thought DLH won, but he showed poor judgment in running late in the fight. Not sure whose idea that was.
I thought Oscar won it comfortably when I watched it in real time. Second time around I had it a bit closer but still for Oscar clearly. The giving up the last 3rd of the fight by De La Hoya was a bit of a mystery as he was doing it comfortably until that point. Maybe a stamina issue? Funnily enough even though Oscar gave up those rounds Tito still didn’t do much offensively either. He threw and landed more but he missed a lot as well. De La Hoyas defense was pretty tight still. A really disappointing fight for what on paper shaped as an epic classic. Two good, skilled, aggressive punchers meeting in their absolute primes, how could it fail? Possibly the biggest let down I’ve felt from a super fight ever.
Gift for Trinidad, and De La Hoya surrendering the last three rounds so poorly doesn't change that. It often seems to me that when people try to justify the decision, they normally do so by ridiculing De La Hoya for running at the end, or for the fact that he never hurt Trinidad or wanted to duke it out at close quarters with him. But that doesn't disqualify him from getting the decision under the scoring system in use. Trinidad looked poor in that fight for the most part and it's a joke to argue that he won more rounds than De La Hoya regardless of how bad a taste De La Hoya's dire performance in the last three rounds left in the mouth. I think you've got to be actively looking to give Trinidad rounds wherever possible just to get a draw. Now if someone comes up with a 114-114 card I can just about accept that, but the fight wasn't scored a draw. I appreciate that the two cards in Trinidad's favour were by a narrow margin, but when more or less nobody on any forum I've posted on has ever scored it to him outright by any kind of margin at all, but somehow two judges at ringside on the night do, I think Oscar is entitled to feel a little hard done by. De La Hoya didn't necessarily get anyone on the edge of their seats in the first nine rounds as he built up his lead, but while that is a disappointment for the fans, the onus was on Trinidad to adapt and up his game. He never really did that, and was let back into the fight by De La Hoya as much as he worked his own way back into it. As I mentioned the other day, it's a rare example of a Superfight where neither guy really emerged with their reputation enhanced. If anything, they both took a dent. De La Hoya couldn't seize the moment to mark himself out as a true great (and that would have been the case even if he'd have got the verdict) and Trinidad's performance must go down as one of the worst to have ever won a fight of such magnitude. De La Hoya by 1-3 rounds for me.
I see no scenario where Trinidad won this fight; the most permissive scoring on his behalf would be a draw. And that's really stretching it. But yeah, it was stupid of him to cost a bit the last few rounds - though I think he did not exactly "run" as some folks claim. That's been exaggerated a bit.
Yes Trinidad deserved it. Alot of close rounds. Oscar just simply wouldn't fight. You could shade it either way but the guy who fought won the fight. Not a robbery at all
