Golovkin wins a decision for me. He's a whole lot closer to Monzon's size than a lot of the guys Carlos fought. I'm positive that Golvokin could take Monzon's best punch on the chin and keep fighting like usual. Monzon had a good chin but I don't think he would take Golovkin's best punch without going on the retreat if not get knocked down.

I'm a bit biased here. I'm not very impressed by Monzon and his most notable wins are against short guys in their 30s. That being said his resume is overall better than Golovkin's. I think G would capitalize on how slow Monzon's combinations are too. GGG cuts off the ring better than anyone that Monzon fought too.

I've binge watched pretty much every Golovkin fight from the past decade over the last week and I wanted to see how my opinion of him has changed.

Monzon is the most similar stylistic ATG to Golovkin I believe, so it's interesting considering how this fight would go with what we now know.

    Govkin is 5'10 with a 70' reach.
    Monzon was 5'12 with a 76' reach.

Whilst Golovkin has an amazing jab, is it good enough to beat the longer Monzon to the jab?

Whilst Golovkin has amazing footwork, is he really going to have to cut the ring off vs Monzon?

Both fighters underwhelmed on the back foot, so does that mean it would become a phone box shootout? Or could one fighter drive the fight and become the ring general?

The stylistic challenge is really intriguing.

I don't think there's a huge gap in resume neither, but then again I scored the Canelo fights in favour of Golovkin, and actually had Golovkin retired at the same age as Monzon, he would have been undefeated through his career.

    So has my opinion changed?

5 years ago I felt I hadn't seen any thing to suggest Golovkin betas Monzon. Now I find myself thinking maybe I should consider the converse, have I seen enough Monzon to suggest he beats Golovkin?

My default answer is still Monzon wins, but I'm not sure I could justify it if I was really pushed.

Carlos Monzon wins this bout by unanimous decision over GGG. Monzon was champion from 1970-1977, 14 title defenses, retired with his belt. His record was 89-3-9, 61 KO's and had not lost since Oct 9 1964, 82 bout winning streak. Was on the deck twice in his career, against Jorge Fernandez in 1966, got up and won on points, and against Rodrigo Valdes, on July 30 1977, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, in round 2, Carlos got up and won on points, then retired. Golovkin is durable enough to withstand that Monzon right hand that stopped Nino Benvenuti in round 12 on Nov 7 1970, in Rome, Italy. Gennady would make a good fight of it landing to the lanky torso of Carlos, only to run into the long left jab that sets up Monzon's counters. To be fair to both, they fought the best fighters of their respective era's. To ne this fight resembles the Nov 11 1972 title defense against Bad Bennie Briscoe, that Carlos won by unanimous decision.
