If Bowe had fought Tyson, that would have been the closeth's we would have gotten to this match up. Could Bowe's chin hold up under Dempsey's punching power? Would Bowe be too much for the smaller man?

    I will take Dempsey.

Dempsey has pretty fast hands and very good defense for a power puncher. Because he fights out of a crouch he can get under Bowe jab, hook and right hand enough to get close.

I watched a few Dempsey fights to prepare my thoughts and I don’t remember seeing too many jabs. That means he is something like an aggressive counter puncher.

Bowe has a tremendous offensive selection but the only punch that can land with any consistent hurt is his uppercut and body punches.

I don’t think Bowe can get all of his punches in and at the same time protect himself from the fast hand and foot and more powerful puncher.

Dempsey is Holyfield but faster, smarter with better defense and harder punches.

Dempsey would have to get the job done early with big punches against Riddick Bowe, I think, or he gets stopped.

Bowe looked casual and a little unimpressive and plodding in the early rounds vs a smaller, lighter, quicker Herbie Hide, but made it a brawl and overpowered him by the end. As the bout goes on, Riddick's size and power would likely take over vs Dempsey too.

With respect to Jack, overall, Bowe's a comfortable favourite for me.

    Absolutely right.

Not just this, but Dempsey would defeat Bowe 2/3. Stops 90s Tyson too and evades a rematch ear-bite to sneak-in an uppercut in return, setting big cheat to the canvas.
Unfortunately, he outfights a draw with Lennox and got a ten-count win with Lummox flat outside the ring: "When I woke up, I had no idea where I was. The first thing that I saw was the ring, but tipped over! Then I heard Jim Lampley saying "its ok Lennox"."
Then, at the age of 46, he TKOs the 310 1/2lb, 7'0" "Neanderthalian Nightmare" after dropping him 5 times. A week after the bout, Valuev stutters big thanks to Dempsey because the cosmetic surgeons had easy work on the then limp iron skull: "Thanks to Jacks magic hands I look real good now, great!"
In between, Jack accomplished the glory to be the only fighter to stop Ray Mercer, after dropping him to a knee: "Hell he could punch, I´d rather fight Lennox Lewis twice a week than this savage once a year!"

    50-50 fight

Dempsey is faster than Holyfield, yes, but Holyfield is more proven vs punchers.

Dempsey would have to be careful not to run into any big uppercuts. If Dempsey can land some powerful combinations early and hurt Bowe, he can win a decision.

If not, Bowe will wear him down.

I am tempted to agree with you.

Watching Dempsey vs Willard and Firpo, one gets the impression that Dempsey does have serious power even for the big boys.

Also watching his footwork I think he is more dangerous than Evander and we saw the wars Bowe allowed himself to be in with Evander. It could be detrimental to exchange carefree with a puncher like Dempsey who is also elusive. Evander was foolishly there to be hit back.

Dempsey had right style to beat Bowe and he was tremendous fighter. I'm not sure if I'd make him a favorite though. Fights against Fulton and Morris would certainly help here.

Really good replies..... But. I am not a Bowe fan . But he was tough and durable. I think he would be too strong for Jack. I know people will say he brought down Firpo. Riddick was alot stronger and faster. Loved the question

Bowe lacks way too much toughness to get a win over Dempsey imo. He was almost crying when Golota hit him on the inner thigh from a low blow. Never seen somebody complain so much about low blows. In Dempsey's day that was just apart of it. Dempsey hit guys low on occasion as did Greb, Gibbons, and all of the other fighters from that era. Dempsey isn't Holyfield. He wouldn't be right in front Bowe waiting to be hit for 12 rounds.

Can't see Dempsey ever beating Bowe, Lennox, Wlad, Vitali or Fury. All of them were millions times better than Jess Willard.

Waldimir and Vitali style wise are almost exactly like Jess Willard and if they had to fight Jack in 1919 they would almost certainly suffer a similar conclusion. I would take Jack today over them because they are so stiff and basic.

Fury is overweight and it could be argued chinny. He would not be able to get away from Dempsey who would be moving just as much but in a crouch similar to Frazier but with more power and speed. Wilder stood straight up and was easy to hit. Dempsey is not.

Lennox has shown me that he can beat all styles so I would favor him over Dempsey, but he had better be sharp Lennox because anything less is on the deck...just like the original 250 pound giant, Jess Willard.

Dempsey has virtually no chance. Different league.
