I remember being a young guy going to see Quarry get KO'd by Mac Foster 24-0 24ko's 6"3 220 - Quarry was going to get killed - but Jerry took the best Mac offered - he got hit as Jerry usually did but Quarry started banging to the body then the head, once he hurt Mac he went back to the body and head and Mac started taking a beating )I think that fight mentally destroyed Mac Foster) the crowd roared when the final act of the finish by Jerry and it was an exciting finish. Then Earnie Shavers (Don Kings guy) I remember also sitting ringside and stood next to Don King (crazy hair) I had just seen Shavers take out Jimmy Ellis in 1 round in MSG as well - Shaver went right out vs Quarry and threw bombs but Quarry had a solid chin and fired back RSC with Shavers wobbling after a count- Exciting action Big Ron Lyle another undefeated 6'3 220 lb heavyweight- another muscular beast - Ron came out on the hunt but Jerry met him head on with some slipping but a solid combo hurt Lyle badly and Jerry's chin proved superior - Lyle was careful after that and Quarry kept the big man at bay with the threat of a repeat - nice fight lots of exchange - Quarrys chin nullified Lyle and his power kept Lyle honest. I remember Joe Alexander young guy inexperienced but power in Nassau Coliseum - Joe dropped Quarry with a bomb - I saw sparks fly from Quarry ass as he was deposited on the canvas hard - Jerry got up and survived the round but went back for more and this time Joe came up short - exciting fight When Jerry was young he was fit but green - when he got older he was smart but not as fit- when he fought Norton he had no business fighting and still rocked Norton Unfortunately for Quarry he shared an era with Joe Frazier and then Ali - I always wanted to see Jerry fight Foreman because I thought he would be able to take George into later rounds and Jerry had power - I would have placed a nice bet on Jerry Jerry could handle the slow Big Guys with the reputation of Power I will never forget the roar in the Garden on those nights - Jerry Quarry nights - Great nights of action and Jerry's hand being raised
Truly one of the great fighters of that generation. Loved watching him. Had a monster 1973 Only guys he really could not compete with were Ali and Frazier. Would have loved to see him and Foreman. RIP Jerry
Very good fighter. Good skill, quick hands, snappy power. Loved to dig to the body. Tough as nails. Not the best luck.
Jerry was a good fighter with wins over Lyle, Shavers, Foster, Patterson among others. He cut down Bodell the British champion in 64 seconds. Jerry had a very fine career. Quarry was just up against the toughest competition in prime Ali and Frazier. RIP.
Another win thats goes unnoticed , was Jerry's goliath win over Buster Mathis, Jerry was a 12-5 underdog, giving away almost 40 lbs, and Buster was good, and at the best of his career. Larry Middleton (Ranked #7) also. Tony Doyle was in the NABF top ten 1971, Rufus brassell was 13-1, even Willis Earls was the WBC'S Fifth ranked Light heavyweight in 1970. (and was ko'd by Jerry's sparring partner "bossman Jones"
