everyone knows who tommy is. mason was heavyweight from britain who finished his career with a 37-1 (34) record. his only loss came to lennox lewis on a stoppage due to an eye swollen shut. he wasnt the fastest, but he was a massive heavyweight, very durable with very good powerr. had to retire due to a detached retina. who wins?? morrison was faster imo, but i think mason would have come down on him and stopped him the way mercer did. mason tko9 tommy.
Mason could certainly punch Tommy senseless if he gets the chance, but if Morrison takes a tip out of his Foreman playbook (rather than his Mercer playbook) then he can whittle away at him with jabs and hooks before scoring a late stoppage. I'd say Morrison TKO8. Mason's chin seems solid but it's not Mercer levels, and he did swell up badly from Lewis's constant jabbing (which was the whole gameplan). Tommy might even be able to win a toe-to-toe because he hit so damn hard and so quick, but that's taking a pretty big Bentt-style risk of getting a brain-rattling shot in reply. Best to box.
LOL, nice spin. For the record I was at Lewis/Mason that March night and I figured Mason to win; I was the only one of the five who went with me to pick Mason Lewis at the end was in total control, and it was very much a correct stoppage. As for the thread in hand; Mason did have an excellent chin, a good heart and a clubbing power, but he did struggle sometimes in his longer bouts, perhaps in part due to poor conditioning. Biggs looked like he may take his '0' for a period in their bout. Wills too made Mason struggle. If they had met in 1990 I would have taken Mason to win easily, but Tommy did not peak until the Foreman bout, and that machine out gun(n)s Mason, in mine and I suspect Great Grand Uncle, The Duke's opinion as well. 1990 Mason TKO8 1990 Morrison Prime 1993 Morrison WU12 Prime 1989-91 Mason (7-5)
Hey cool, Lewis-Mason was the first Lewis fight (though not the first Mason fight) I ever saw...from a tv screen, not the arena sadly. I was rooting for Mason at the time...he was the 6-4 favourite too. It wasn't until Lewis-Bruno in '93 that I got behind Lewis.
Interesting fight. I feel that Morrison was technique-wise, a level above Mason. He was quicker and put together some lovely combinations. I see Morrison taking control early, landing thudding punches to Mason's face and body and being well ahead early. Mason was a tough ******* though and would stoicly absorb the punishment. Tommy had the unique ability to implode though, and this is where I sense Mason would take advantage. Eventually Morrison would tire and Mason would start landing those clubbing blows of his, forcing the ref to stop the fight in about round 7 or 8.
Yes, I would like to clarify that my Morrison TKO8 call would be a ref stoppage due to cuts or taking unanswered shots rather than Mason eating canvas, even with Tommy throwing. Gary was a durable guy.
This could be interesting. It's really all about if Mason wants to get busy or not. Morrison could certainly outbox Mason (unless he gases out, which is certainly very possible), but if it turns into a firefight for the reason that Mason is just much tougher.
I think Morrison was the better fighter but Mason had the power to crack Tommy’s chin at any given time. This could be a toss up
