He even has a night named after him! Great fighter in his pomp, an enjoyable watch but that broken jaw v Beltran (who was robbed) changed him. Something thereafter was missing... Total respect for the guy though.
Had a very good career. Some fortunate decisions toward the later side of it which I didn't care for though. 2011-13 was a solid run for him
How much did FW take him for ??? Not paying a fighter should result in a suspension until said fighter is paid...Really really taking the ****
Watching Burns v Lee Selby was a really depressing experience, both were done and both should have called it a day before the fight. I'm glad Burns v Taylor never happened as that would have been harsh on Burns to take a beating like he would have got. I went on a stag do a couple of years ago with a bloke from Aberdeen and he goes all over the place and he said that Ricky Burns is one of the nicest sportsman he's ever met. You see him and he's got all those tacky tribal tattoos, cover ups and what have you and you can be forgiven for thinking "here we go" but from I hear he's a decent bloke and he always came across that way. As I said the other day, I was absolutely gutted when he beat Mitchell but full of admiration for how he did it.
You're obviously unaware that Warren owed Burns 105k in prize money for months after the Mitchell fight, hence why Burns and Warren had it out in court.
My recollection was that Warden took legal action against Burns for breach of contract when he defected to Eh Day's stable and Burns took legal action against Warden for non payment of fight purse. I believe the outcome was both won their cases with Burns still ending up bust after Warden did not pay him his awarded sum of money - Warden used his tried and tested trick winding up his company starting with a new company name/registration the very next day. Sadly resulted in Burns still fighting to this very day having been a shell for years since the Beltran fight. Should have retired as one of Scotland's finest.
The ultimate pro. Trains like an absolute demon and a great example to any young pro as to how you should look after yourself in order to get the absolute most out of your career.
Exactly that. People often knock Burns saying that for someone with such limited ability he went far but the way I see it is I much prefer to see people go further than anyone thought they could through sheer determination and dedication ie. Burns than people with a lot of ability and no dedication and desire ie. Broner. Burns earned every penny he made and deserved more.
Burns' big mistake was stiffing Frank Warren the way he did. He was always going to get battered in Court. He should have negotiated a buy out or just seen the contract out. He ended up fighting on Eddie Hearn's terms rather than his own. I've no doubt that Hearn paid more than Warren but Ricky had to take the Fights he was given just to pay Warren back.
I agree. Nice to see people respecting Burns for a change, He was a very good fighter for a few years in his prime. The jaw break in the Beltran fight changed him though, he's not been the same since that. I used to love watching him around that time.. of the Mitchell/Martinez fights. But in recent years his fights have been dull to watch.
During that period between the Roman Marrinez fight up to the jaw break against Beltran. He was a brilliant superb fighter. His jab, chin, heart, stamina all first class. After Beltran injury he was never the same fighter.. Had a fine career, 3 weight world champ. Doesn't get the respect he deserves.
