I think their punching power was of two different varieties. Witherspoon had a slower, heavier type of punch, whereas Sanders had fast precision. Both were effective, depending on the type of opponent they were fighting. I don't think there is any way to accurately gauge how hard either of them hit.

Yes Sanders was a faster snappier puncher, but I think Spoon was a much better fighter. Tubbs was pretty dam slick at his best, Sanders would have problems as Spoon did hitting him cleanly.

    Probably true.

I don't know about you, but personally I think Corrie Sanders gets underrated around here though. I'm not trying to make the guy out to be a great fighter, but I do think he was better than some give him credit for.

Agreed, its hard to compare left hooks from Southpaw and Orthodox fighters but in terms of ability Tyson is better.

Sanders was never really a polished fighter. He had quick hands and good power but his technique and conditioning was always going to keep a level below top contenders.

Tubbs would box his ears off especially when Tony was at his best.

I say Corrie cruises to a victory inside of 15 holes in match play on the golf course, but Tubbs befuddles him and maybe even takes him out late over 10, 12 or 15 rounds.

Tony can bring his brother Nate, who KO’d Sanders clean and left him sprawled on the canvas for quite some time, to be at press conferences, the weigh-in and in the corner to remind Corrie.

Nate had only two other wins over boxers with winning records (one in his debut against a 1-0 IIRC, the other a journeyman) and he flattened Sanders.

As for Sanders, look at his resume. It’s quite a ‘where’s Waldo’ search to find a decent second- or third-best win for him apart from the win over Waldo.

Tubbs was 244 lbs. for Witherspoon.

229 lb Tubbs v. Page is the best version.

That version would outslick Sanders for a UD.

Sanders had fast hands but Tubbs had fast hands and fast feet.

Out of shape id still go with Tubbs UD.

Ironically Nate Tubbs beat a prime Samders. Lol.

I replied to this a few years and now I say Corrie Sanders would KTFO tubbs. Who did Tubbs beat, Page? Everyone and their brother beat Greg Page between 1984-1987. Sanders beat Klitschko. Corrie was a southpaw with fast hands and decent power while Tubbs was subject to getting KO’d by lefts and rarely in good shape..

    Who else did Corrie beat?

He had less hits than Bananarama.

Yeah but Tubbs has more than half a dozen wins better than Corrie’s second-best win.

Your guy fought well once and won a shootout before he got tired. Tubbs fought much better many more times.

I’ll take in-shape Tony over Corrie’s six-minute prime by late stoppage and fat boy TNT over golfer Sanders by decision all day every day.

Would you care to list these half dozen wins ? The only ones I can think of were Bruce Seldon, Orlin Norris ( ruled a No contest ) and James Smith who was a nobody at the time Tubbs beat him. The fringe contender version of Ross purity who Corrie beat was as good as those wins. In Sanders 10th pro fight he beat the dangerous Johnny Duplooy where as Tubbs fought mostly guys with losing records through his first 18 bouts.

Johnny DuPlooy had been whacked out in three rounds or less a couple of times leading into that. He was exposed, shot, a never-was who was never going to be ... a South African who they tried building into something that he could never be.

Yeah, I’ll take the three you mentioned along with Greg Page, Tyrell Biggs and you can throw in Jesse Ferguson or Jimmy Thunder as better than anyone Corrie defeated who wasn’t named Wlad.

C’mon, the guy was a one-time prize in a cereal box. Sanders was exposed by Nate Tubbs, but he was a big southpaw who could whack for a couple of rounds before he began getting tired and thinking about his next tee time.

Tubbs would move laterally and nullify Sanders straight on rushes.

Wlad stood right there itn front of him and so did a faded Bert Cooper.

    Those were Sanders best wins.

Tubbs easily best Bonecrusher and Page and even vastly overwright lost a close decisipn to Witherspoon

Yes, Tubbs was stopped by the left hook of absolute prime Mike Tyson. The out of shape Tubbs stood right in front of Mike, which was a suicidal strategy. The 85-86 version of Tubbs was better than the version that faced Tyson. So was the slimmed down and rededicated version that was edged by a rising Riddick Bowe.

It should also be remembered that Sanders beat a pre Emmanuel Steward trained Wlad who slugged more and failed to properly use his physical advantages. Wlad was also KTFO by Lamon Brewster in the same time period. After getting with Steward, he beat Brewster fairly easily. I suspect the same would have happened if Wlad and Sanders had a rematch and Wlad made adjustments.

It’s sad that Corrie’s second-best win was probably over a 247-pound Bert Cooper, but it’s also probably true.
