Joe Louis's triple left hook vs Max Baer

Again Louis though he lifted off the floor landed perfectly ( On balance) and was in perfect position to either
attack again or, get into a defensive posture if the opponent countered. Triple left hooks have been used
by multiple world class fighters since the 30's on film against other PROFESSIONAL fighters. Jones jr.
did it all the time, Leonard was capable of it, so was Robinson. So your comment about "A fighter shouldn't
be hit by the same punch in theory is right, (My old trainer said the same thing) but in reality many fighters
,were capable of doing it. So it depends on the skills and speed of the fighters using that combo.
So in reality our coaches were wrong.

He should have paced that right hand against his jaw to block shots, his defense was awful, Hearns fought way better v Hagler with a broken right hand after his brilliant start v Marvin.

 

If I rememver correctly, I've seen James Jeffries using triple hook against Gus Ruhlin. It's used for decades, I don't know what he's talking about.

 

When I hear triple left hook, I think of that video of Roy Jones Jr landing three on a double-end bag in the span of one second.

Well, I hear you, dawg, but see I'm saying you never prepare for bad defense and to launch attacks on guys with bad defense, so it's like I can walk up to a toddler and telegraph an enormous slap on the back of his head, like the kind you can see comin from a block away. I can get away wittit cuz they a toddler and they ain't got the reflexes and the hameye coordination to do nothin about it. I can just slap em that way. But I'd never train nobody to throw a strike of any kind that way. So, they ain't wrong the way I see it if they trainin you to fight good fighters. The fact that these other dudes are open to stupid attacks don't mean stupid attacks is what you should try to throw dough. Ya feel me?

 

It's very easy to pick a certain moment in a fight, showcase that moment to infer that's normal for that fighter. The reality is with Wilder when the ENTIRE fight is watched, not a few seconds to pump him up, it's easy to see most of the time, he looks very amateurish. In fact most world class amatuers look much better than he does over the entirety of their fights... Wilder hits hard, but that about it . In fact, moments after this knock down of Fury, he starts windmilling every punch, most were not within a foot of Fury. Fury saw those whined up telegraphed punches a mile away and easily avoided or blocked them. But it's a nice try Mark nevertheless with Wilder's best moment (singular) in two fights with Fury. Sure a lot of the newby boxing fans were thrilled about your proof of Wilder's " greatness".

 

1 out of 30 isn't great boxing Mark. Look at the hook at 2:53 . it doesn't get sloppier than that

 

It also depends on how badly the first punch stunned the opponent. A fighter's defensive abilities and instincts can be rendered extinct for a few seconds (or longer, of course) by a solid punch. I know this is obvious, but I think it is relevant to this discussion.

 

I wouldn’t say I took “umbrage”, more of a parsing out or clarification . I didn’t make any major assumptions that you were being flippant , you don’t strike me as that kind of poster. To genuinely talk about the sport that many of us love it can’t be a valentine or have sacred cows. Frankly, I am not a huge Max Baer fan and I don’t think anyone is going to confuse him with Pernell Whitaker. I was pointing out that counter to clown or flake reputation he had known he was in for a tough night and unlike the literal punching bag he had a choice and did it anyway. I was struck by this in that it added complexity and a shade of gray to the Max Baer story for me

He went in to the fight that night with a broken right hand and bone chips in his left wrist. Apparently he was under the belief that he could not postpone the match to undergo the necessary surgery results and the results of the surgery couldn’t be guaranteed. He felt his best option was to proceed with the fight and hope to catch Joe Louis early with a big right hand. This would require the use of Novacaine shot prior to the fight. Here the stories differ a bit, there was a rain delay resulting in the effectiveness of the Novacaine shot to dissipate by the time of the opening bell. There are also stories that the shot was given incorrectly causing him to lose sensation throughout his arm. Understandably, this caused Max to panic and lead to Jack Dempsey, who was working his corner, threaten to beat him if he didn’t go face Louis.

 

Tua pulled off a similar move against Darroll Wilson.

Im definitely not questioning Baer’s courage knowing now that he went in with a killer like Louis at about 50%. Louis is still the most impressive puncher I’ve seen at almost any weight. Beautiful technique and accuracy.

 

I think in some ways Joe Louis gets short changed by the fact that he did not look like a super muscular freak along with his calm demeanor. He let his performance speak for itself due in part due the racial component of being the first black heavyweight champion since Jack Johnson. It also probably doesn’t help that his opposition was, in many cases unfairly, characterized as bums of the month.
