Dont remeber, (maby it shouldnt be called show, my english isnt that good), it had some other martial arts athletes there too, calculating speed of punch and power of kick. They used car crash testing devices of some sort, and if I remember correctly they calculated ~800 pounds behind boxers punch.

So 800 ft lbs is enough to kill a guy? **** I've been hit with a lot of hard rights and it hasn't killed me yet. It seems to me you'd have to be a freak of nature to hit someone hard enough to kill them outright, i mean sure it's been done before but those are exceptions. If the average joes right hand could kill a guy boxing would probably be outlawed.

I see whats your saying, but put average joe in front of some power puncher blind fold him to make sure hes not ready for a punch, and you might see a one hit kill.
Some time ago I read an article about some bum killing teenager with one punch becouse he hit him with a snowball (bum was ex boxer).
So I do belive that its possible, afterall ,800 pounds cought flush on your chin most definetly gona damage your brain.

Back to topic, I think right cross generates more power since you put more weight behind it, and punch follows through more easly since its a straight punch and any resistance thats in the way is absorbed by all body, while hook depends more on your shoulder strength.

If you're talking about the documentary "National Geographic fightscience" which I think you are they said nothing about the boxers weight, he looked like a heavyweight or very near to it, he hit with 1000 pounds of pressure and they said out of all the other martial arts hand strikes tested in the experiment that was the only one which they could pretty much guarantee would cause a knock out, not death. However the only times i've heard of people dying from one punch in a street fight is either if they fall straight back and hit the back of their head on the road/concrete or if they get a really savage hook that breaks the neck.

I'd like to add my own question by the way.. I always wonder why is the left hook such a powerful punch for an orthadox fighter assuming he is right handed, wouldn't the right hook be just as good if not better? I guess I need someone to explain the kenetic flow of the left hook with the right foot back.

An orthodox fighters left hook is considered better because of the nature of the punch. Simply put, a left hook is better because your left side is closer. A right hook might possibly be more powerful, but they leave you VERY open to a counter and telegraph horribly. The disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Have you been hit with gloves or without them ? Cause that makes a huge difference.
Second of all, the discovery show he was talking about analyzed the damage of a shot received without any attempt to block it, as if you don't see it coming. Of course the damage won't be that great if you block it in some way or if it just grazes you.

Anyway, getting back to the topic, a straight cross will always pack more power than a hook since you put more body weight behind the cross. But that doesn't necessarily mean it will always do more damage cause, as others have pointed out, your neck acts as more of a shock absorber for that shot and if your chin is tucked in, you will most likely receive the shot in your forehead, the hardest part of the body. However, if it hits you on the nose, you're out.
As for the hook, that hits you from the side, but just like in the cross's case, the damage depends on what part of your face it catches.
If it catches you on the cheekbone, it's easier to absorb. If it catches your jaw, you're out.
A good example for this are the shots that Ali got hit with by Cooper, Frazier and Shavers. Shavers most likely hit harder, but he caught Ali on the cheekbone, that's why Ali was able to take it and keep standing. Whereas Cooper and Frazier caught Ali's jaw, that's why Ali went down.

For the amount of kinetic energy imparted into a stationary target a big, wide, swinging hook will generate more force.

The torque (power) you apply is the same but the force is increased by the fist being further away from the centre of rotation, causing an increase in speed (not acceleration). Its the same reason a spinning ball on a 3 foot string will travel further than on a 1 foot string.

But things are not equal. The mechanics of throwing "a" hook to a straight are very different and not everybody can do them both equally well.

Physical damage also depends on how the person can absorb the impact. A simple example would be if the person is braced for the impact. Another example would be if they could roll with the punch, increasing the time of the impact which decreases the peak energy. It's the same reason why modern cars crumple. If someone is standing square on and you throw a straight punch their body cant go backwards. If you throw a hook to the same squared up stance the whole body can move sideways and dissipate the energy.

Then there is the placement of the shot. A swinging club to the brain case, anaotomy designed to protect against impact, will not do as much physical problems as a softer straight to the jaw.
