Yeah, I sussed out that's what you were doing. Although personally, I'd say Marcel is worthy of being top 16, especially if Arguello is.

Alas, it is your list and I'm no guru.

Anyway, aside from Armstrong, I don't think I'd pick too many guys over Marcel. Pep, Saldívar, Sanchez, Pedroza and Saddler are all maybes, I think he's right there on that level.

Without looking, I think he fought three ranked guys, going 2-1, though tbf the 1 was a robbery.

If you put him in the 16, you're not rating him on what he did but what you'd expect him to do. Loads of guys have victories over other guys in the top sixteen and they've no less right to a place than Marcel.

Gomez twice, Arguello and Shibata are my recollection. I thought he won all of the ones on film with room to spare.

For example, you have Arguello in there, who has wins over Olivares, Kobayashi, Hafey and Herandez. Is that much better than Marcel's, if at all? Not imo, plus Marcel had more defences, stayed around longer and was better H2H.

Like I said, I'm no lower weight guru like yourself, but I disagree with Arguello being above Marcel. Personally I think both are around 8-12.

I honestly don't think you need to see Baby Arizmendi's Armstrong victory to be at the featherweight limit to rank him over Marcel. He did better work for me. I'm racking my brains to see why anyone would rank him over Barrera, never mind Hamed...his legacy belongs right alongside that of Chris John.

Looks lovely against moderate opposition though.

Arguello..beast at 126 IMO. Dont pick many to beat him at 126 or 130 for that matter

Miller might have been more of a pest than a pure boxer, but he's a skilled, mobile, durable pest. I say those are attributes that could allow Miller to give Arguello fits. I've got Miller stealing enough rounds by darting in, getting some business done and getting out before Arguello can set himself to land anything really huge to secure a close decision over 15.

A few things: Arguello also sparked Legra inside a round, and Marcel lost to Hernandez (although might have been a robbery as the AP account only really shows Marcel putting Hernandez through the ropes and it was in Venezuela)

Whittling it down to ‘ranked guys’ doesn’t tell the whole story IMO as the guys Marcel beat were phenomenal. Sometimes quality>quantity IMO. I have Marcel tenth, but McGrain also doesn’t outwardly say ‘film says robbery so I say robbery’ which is fine as well, but Marcel dominated Shibata for 11 of the 15 rounds IMO

I pick Miller. Arguello could be outboxed and I think Miller with his tricky southpaw style could do it. I think Miller establishes his jab and uses his slick style to avoid Arguello's combinations. He'd have to take some punishment as anyone fighting Arguello would, but I think he could pull off a split decision.

Alexis Arguello won a clean decision over Freddie Miller to advance to the ATG featherweight tournie in fifteen rounds.

Arguello dominated early scoring with his jab and one two and some cuffing hooks on the inside; while Miller tended to dominate these exchanges up close, Arguello exacted a heavy toll for each visit. This made for rather unappealing fight through seventh but the second half of the fight was all drama. Miller was hurt by Arguello punches in the eighth and ninth before winning the tenth big scoring with volumes of bodyshots; Arguello failed to re-take control of the real estate in the eleventh and in fact Miller appeared to win four of the last five rounds, finally out-hit in the fifteenth as Arguello rallied to close the show. Some observers had the fight up for grabs at the start of the fifteenth but in fact Arguello had already sealed the win barring disaster.
