1977 Jimmy Young vs 1971 Joe Frazier

Joe wins a first round ?

 

The 71 version of Frazier who beat Ali would simply overwhelm Jimmy in 6 or 7 rounds. If you couldn't back Joe up with a bit of power then you are in real trouble.
After the first couple of rounds, which Frazier always gave away, even to Stander and Daniels, Joe just presses Young from one set of ropes to another whipping in hooks and uppercuts and using his very under rated short jab to open his man up. Jimmy just wouldn't have an answer. He gets decked, gets up and is stopped on his feet in the 6th or 7th.
By 1973 Young takes Frazier all the way, maybe even beats him. Have a look at the Frazier v Joe Bugner fight.

Young was smart and crafty vs a Foreman- Lyle type of fighter and would offer crafty resistance to Joe but pressure and full steam ahead power and stamina are a hard combination to hold off with out serious offensive power - Frazier was the wrong style for Young - Jimmy did not have enough to hold Joe off with - Frazier breaks Young down - late stop 10-15

 

Frazier would eventually grind him down. Young is very cute and durable and wouldn't go early imo.

 

Frazier is the worst H2H matchup for Young imo.

 

A good post but i can't fathom Young being knocked down in the first round by Fraizer if he survived the hardest two hitters of all time.

Due to the style i believe a stoppage is unavoidable in this case but not till much later.

 

Tyson's just as bad.

 

You are correct, but did'nt Shavers kayo Jimmy in round 1? And we are talking about Joe Frazier on the night of March 8 1971, in my post, Joe had not met George Foreman yet. Frazier was a runaway freight train that night.

 

Truth all of that i forgot about the crushing defeat he suffered to Shavers but i disagree with your prediction.

 

Young actually lost by tko in round 3 not 1 in his first fight with Shavers.

 

Young was a struggling 10 fight novice when Earnie stopped him. Shavers had 40+ fights behind him. After another 7 fights they rematched and everyone scored it for Young except those that mattered. Young was dropped in the middle of the fight (seriously, how hard does Shavers hit) but came back and had Shavers reeling in the last two rounds. This began Young's peak run where next fight he widely outpointed Lyle, run Ali close a year later and schooled Lyle again, beat Foreman the next year and lost a close one to Norton late that same year. The wheels then fell off.

Frazier stopping him fast would be unlikely imo.

 

If you did not have the monster power and size/skill to deliver it effectively against Joe you were getting hurt .. very few had it .. Young had talent but would get worn down and likely stopped late in a fight ..

 

Have you seen footage of them are sparring? I have only seen a short clip with nothing decisive or earth shattering.
