Weather or not it originated in Philly or Michigan or anywhere is besides the point. It is a two word phrase that denotes what would otherwise take a paragraph to describe. I call it the Philly Shell because people know what you are talking about when you say it.

How about watching film of George Benton for starters someone the Mayweathers never gave credit too. Then they added a name to it like they invented it.

Exactly. Benton had **** all to do with the Mayweathers, never called his style the "Philly Shell" and would have been laughed at if he had. Nevermind that the idea that ONE SINGLE fighter from Philadelphia somehow invented a Philadelphia style that nobody else in Philadelphia used and nobody laid claim to and even he didnt name is ridiculous. I dont care why escudo or anyone else uses the name. Its a dumbass name that has ZERO bearing in reality and really only illustrates that the people who use it have bought into some dumbass idea out of ignorance. I will say again: Go to google, newspapers.com, your ring magazine collection, etc. You will find zero mention of the "Philly Shell" prior to 2010. So suddenly somebody came up with a misnomer to identify a style that had been around for 100 years and Im not supposed to call out the stupidity of that. Go start watching Philadelphia fighters. Tell me they fought like Mayweather. You found one fighter, who kinda sorta uses the same stance as Mayweather and suddenly you have a style that typifies an entire city with a long DEEP tradition like Philly? Get the **** out of here. Did Briscoe, Watts, Monroe, Goss, Hart, Everett, Hayward, Gypsy Joe, Frazier, Gil Turner, Hopkins, Giardello, Tendler, Saad, Levinsky, Loughran, et al fight anything like Mayweather or even Benton? No. But your poster children for the supposed "Philly Shell" are two guys who fought out of Michigan and themselves came from different traditions... Toney was trained by Bill Miller who was from Michigan by way of Cincinnati and who idolized Ezzard Charles (never fought in a style called the "Philly Shell") and Mayweather was trained by his dad who started boxing in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo and who was trained by Robert Mitchell and Del Williams neither of whom were from Philadelphia. Like I said, some dumbass hipsters invented that name and some dumber hipsters ran with it.

The Mayweather`s did not invent the word Philly shell, I saw a vid where Mayweather Sr credits olden day fighters from Detroit for the style and he called it the Detroit shell.

James countered better off the should roll than Floyd. Rolled with the right hand and came back with hisi own right.

Mark I think you have conflated a few things here.
Philly Shel was a bookie who owned a piece of Chuck Wepner, Detroit Shell is a colloquial term for used prophylactics found in the Detroit river , Shel Silverstein wrote children’s books. Speaking of which, great profile pic! Shot in the dark here, were you a really sweet kid with a ton of energy who drove parents and teachers nuts and maybe should have been on ADD meds?

The guy makes a good point about how the cross is weak to guys with superior hand speed who are able to use feints a d throw quick hooks and right hands to the temple (I've seen foreman get nailed on the forehead and small gaps in his guard) but this was a pretty shopworn Holyfield with slow reflexes like you said. I still found his channel very interesting and informative.
