Legacy wise Ward, based on his slightly better resume. Head to head I pick Joe by SD.

Calzaghe quite comfortably for me. Better fighter, better career, and for all the “he fought at home” talk, Ward did that the most and always had referees helping him. He had home field advantage on many levels.

Depends how much you value all of Calzaghe's WBO mandatories, which gives him that 'longevity' advantage. Personally I'm not all that fussed by bigger numbers if they include only a disproportionately small amount of quality names and don't equate to you proving you're the best in the division (though he did get there eventually, of course).

Ward has less wins at 168, but basically just as many good wins which says a lot. He more or less matched what Calzaghe did at the weight in less than half the time and half the fights. Neither have rock-solid credentials at 175 but a 2016 / 2017 Kovalev was a tougher assignment than a 2008 Hopkins, I'd say.

Seeing as I'd also favour him head-to-head, I'm going with Ward.

Both beat Kessler. But Calzaghe hardly has another win at SMW of the quality of Wards over Froch. And a TKO over Kova is better than a razor close decision over Hopkins.

So Ward has the better top wins. Calzaghe's case rests on numbers and longevity.

In what ways to do you think his career and he as a fighter were better?

Neither rate highly in my book
Ward.... One of the dirtiest fighters in modern history. There is no foul Ward did not flagrantly use.
He NEVER LEGALLY beat Kovalev. Both Ward & Weekes should have been hauled before the commission both were disgraceful.
Calzaghe hardly threw 50 LEGAL punches in any of his fights. He blatantly SLAPPED a foul that used to be called LACING!!!!!!!

The Kessler who faced Calzaghe was much better. His body wasn’t breaking down in 2007, he was one of those fighters who lost something when he lost too. Ward mugged him. Took advantage of a biased referee.
The Kovalev fights are meh to me. He got his ass kicked in the first fight and the second time comes in with new muscles, acne on his body (wasn’t he working with Conte?) and was still losing before Kovalev (who didn’t train his fault I know) got tired but even then the finish was a joke. Ward deliberately went low and Weeks knew it. He could/should have been DQ’d and if Ward really seemed Kovalev “done” that should have been the verdict. He was suspiciously quick to stop the fight.

    I can’t agree.

I don’t think he was a better overall fighter.

I don’t think he had a better career either.

Andre’s wins over Kovalev swing it in his favour.

Joe would never have moved up to LHW and taken that kind of fight.

I couldn’t have said it any better.

Joe’s got the stats, but it’s not enough.

He wasn’t quick to stop the fight in my opinion. Kovalev was spent. He’d already complained to Weeks in the earlier rounds, on 2 body shots which weren’t even debatably low.

In the last round, he took the big right hand and never threw anything back. He ended up being bent over taking unanswered shots. The last one was really low, but Weeks had already made his mind up at that point.

    It never warranted a DQ.

Did he hell ROFLMAO!! Kovalev won the first fight In the second it was a double team Ward & Weekes Vs Kovalev. Ward should have been DQ'd & Weekes ref's licence revoked until he learns a mans testes are NOT level with his navel. Ward is one of the most blatantly dirty fighters I have ever witnessed There is no foul he hasnt used repeatedly
