Either man could win this but I've a little more faith in Floyd tbh.

I wonder, who is the closest stylistic matchup for each?

For Floyd it may be Jimmy Ellis, although it's far from perfect comparison. Both were slick and tough to land on.

For Sharkey you can pick Jack Dempsey for his bob and weave style, but he was still much different fighter.

I admittedly don't know much about Sharkey but read an article (I forgot where) that said he was a boxer similar to Tunney! Surely that's not true is it? I always likened him to be similar to Dempsey.

    Lol.
No, I like Sharkey as a fighter, on his best day, was extremely hard to beat imo. Just you could never tell from what I know of him, which version turns up.
So that being said.. I'll put my money on mr Patterson.

Patterson is a level above Sharkey for my money. Too fast, too technically sound, well balanced and much more of reliable a performer.

No,he's definitely not like Tunney. Gene was a mover and outboxer, he used constant movement on defense and this made him almost impossible to find. Sharkey was more stationary, he used more upper body movement. He had marvelous head movement and was great at ducking and slipping punches.

Sharkey didn't fight like Dempsey either. He used jab a lot more and he wasn't a pressure fighter. He tried to outbox his opponent, not to knock him out.

Level above is an overstatement. Sharkey beat a lot of elite fighters and in some cases, he would fare better than Patterson. For example, I don't think he would be stopped twice in three rounds combined against Liston.

In terms of skill, speed and athletic ability Patterson is a level above. Lasting maybe a few rounds more against Liston wouldn't negate that and Liston is fully capable of blasting Sharkey out in the early going anyway.

Patterson had an awesome skill level, he would have made Sharkey look slow and ordinary then take him out with devastating hooks.

In terms of skills, Sharkey had much different style and skills but he's not worse. He had better jab, he was better outside boxer too. Both were very skilled fighters but in much different way.
In terms of skills, I agree.
In terms of athleticism, I disagree - Sharkey was very athletic and he was bigger and stronger than Floyd.

This fighter would never look ordinary next to Patterson:
