Look at the bright side. It was a much more eventful fight than it could have been.

(The rules SHOULD be the low-blow recipient should be allowed an equal number of free nutshots and then we commence to fighting).

 

Oh I am eternally grateful to Vicente, but I don't think we'll be seeing him on an ESPN card any time soon.

Regarding the Magdaleno/Vicente main event, I'm upset at Byrd's decision to declare a DQ only because it deprived us of hearing what might have been three truly outrageous scorecards. I scored the fight for Magdaleno, 6-3 rounds, 87-79 points, giving Vicente the 7th through 9th rounds. Magdaleno scored knockdowns in the 1st and 5th rounds, and Vicente had three points deducted in the 4th round, two for the low blow followed by the hard right hand that coldcocked Magdaleno as referee Robert Byrd was attempting to break them, and the third for a separate low blow later in the round. Honestly Byrd probably should have stopped the fight in the 4th, because Magdaleno was seriously laid out by that right hand Vicente landed while Magdaleno was trying to duck away while holding his crotch and appealing to Byrd. Magdaleno took nearly four full minutes of the five allotted before continuing on. Credit him for continuing, because that should have been an obvious DQ win for him right there. (SURELY Byrd would not have decided that both punches were accidental, thus making the fight a "no contest" if Magdaleno couldn't have continued!) The fight also could have been stopped earlier in the 10th when Byrd gave yet another point deduction for a low blow, but he let it continue until finally stopping it when Vicente landed one last double-low-blow combo. Anyway, when Magdaleno scored the 1st round knockdown on a perfectly timed short hard counter, it greatly affected Vicente, who spent the next several rounds mostly at a distance instead of inside where he did his best work. Magdaleno for his part wasn't terribly busy, in fact there was a lot of posing and voguing in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but Magdaleno landed enough to take them. The 4th round was dominated by the point deductions. Then Magdaleno scored the 5th round knockdown on another perfectly timed short hard punch, negating some good inside work Vicente had done earlier in that round. Magdaleno took an uneventful 6th round. But then Magdaleno really went into the tank, as Vicente increasingly got inside and became much more aggressive in winning the next three rounds, landing clusters of primarily body shots, but also occasional head shots that came mostly when Magdaleno was crouching/ducking. Magdaleno might have been affected by the low blows, or gassed from the legal body shots, but it seemed more that he was content to ride out the rounds until the inevitable decision win. Magdaleno wasn't any better in the 10th, but Vicente's low blows ended the fight for him. Despite the numerous low blows, Vicente deserves SOME credit, because he was the more aggressive fighter, especially in the later rounds, and while he did very little on the outside, when he got inside he showed a strong preference for going to the body, and he landed effectively there. Magdaleno flashed his quickness and power, especially with the two knockdowns he scored, but other than that, tonight he mainly impressed with his gritty determination to continue fighting after the 4th round debacle.

 

Still boggles my mind that this Magdaleno beat Donaire.
Nonito really lost his way there.
