Rewatching better the match I noticed that he went down twice without being hit from any dangerous punch by Tyson. Well..I'd like someone explain me this: did he go down for any kind of ghost punch like Liston with Ali or because he was frightened by Tyson? Or because he had any interest to be knocked out at round 1?

It's hard to say. It looked fixed to me, but Seldon tried this b4. Against Jose Ribalta in round 1, he went down from a punch that wasn't that hard. He was down twice versus Bowe and Bowe didn't land solidly on him either. It doesn't seem probable to me that Seldon is chinny and thus scared, cuz he fought it out with Oliver McCall for 8 rounds on pretty even terms before gassing. I think Seldon is either a diver or he falls on purpose in hopes that if he wins he can claim he was down several times to impress people.

That fight was faker than a $2 prostitute's orgasm. I don't blame Tyson i think it was similar to Ali's shocked reaction to Liston being overly dramatic.

It was considered such a farce that Bruce Seldon wasn't even invited to the post-fight press conference (which followed the fight on PPV) to explain himself. Instead, Don King just immediately brought out Evander Holyfield and announced the Tyson-Holyfield fight that night.

Everyone knew what happened. Everyone was embarrassed. Tyson wasn't even sure it landed. (It didn't.) Seldon tanked it. Took his $5 million and ran. Nobody wanted to even to be in the same photo or TV frame with him immediately afterward.

For some reason I always crack up when I think of Bowe watching the replay of the fight with the color crew. When Seldon first went down, he popped up and started to hop up and down to show that he was awake and ready to go, and Bowe said: "aw, that didn't impress me at all."

Perhaps not the quip of the season, but I still have a laugh over it to this day.

It was garbage. Seldon loaded his shorts and that was the only way to save face.

I’m pretty sure Seldon took a dive. Don king manipulated the ratings to have an ancient tony Tucker and fringe level Seldon face off for the WBA to be an easy title win for Tyson. I remember watching some other fight on HBO shortly before that match took place and hearing Larry Merchant talk about what a disgrace it was that those guys were ranked #1 and #2. He further mentioned that it was outrageous how Bruce Seldon who was beaten in ONE round by Riddick Bowe was ranked higher. Tony Tucker was like 37 years old and hadn’t beaten a ranked contender in years.. so to answer the thread question, yes.... I believe that fight along with everything which led up to its making was a farce...

If they were so bad, George Foreman should've fought them rather than give up his title.

    Did Larry mention that?

Don King had a deal with Showtime. Mike Tyson got out of prison and fought on Showtime PPV. Larry didn't have anything nice to say about anyone fighting on Showtime in that era. He was an HBO man.
