If he could not punch all the guys he beat 48 of them and 2 of whom he fought and beat twice would have walked through his punches to get to him and beat but clearly he punched hard enough to keep them in check and beat them.
Kid Gavilan has only one more knock out than Floyd despite having nearly 3 times as many fights as Floyd had.
I think Willie Pep's power is a little underrated. He KO'd Sal Bartolo with one punch and broke his jaw. Has KO's in over half of his title defences. KO'd Jimmy MclAllister with a single body shot. Scored a bunch of kd's. He went on record as saying he carried a number of his opponents in order to ensure that he'd keep getting regular work. So, it's very possible that he could have registered additional KO's during his career, especially early on. For context, one of his regular opponents, Chalky Wright, registered 83 KO's in over 220 fights, and is rated as one of the greatest punchers in the history of the featherweight division. Anyway, the correct answers are still Teddy Yarosz and Miguel Canto, along with Tommy Loughran, and Maxie Rosenbloom. Neither FMJ nor Pep were anywhere near as featherfisted as those fighters.
Which is absolutely understandable. I just think that there are some cases where you can tell if a fighter hit harder than his record might indicate, and Pep is one notable example of that.
I think you can add Midget Wolgast to that list. I don't think the KO% is good inductive anyway, no-one is gonna say that Dick Tiger couldn't punch, but his KO% does.
Good call on Wolgast. Yeah, Jimmy McLarnin would be another example of a legitimate puncher with a lackluster KO percentage.
I think you could add Ceferino Garcia to that list, only 40 something percent, but he hit hard enough to drop Ross three times, KO Baby Gans and KO Fred Apostle. Obviously as well as being known as a puncher at the time. Good call on McLarnin.
When an exhausted chavez is just trudging forward and Mayweather still can’t knock him down or hurt him, instead they just have to stop it because the guy is too tired and getting wailed on. Yes. He was never a puncher.
You could do this for ages. Tony Canzoneri only has 44 KO's in 175 fights, but no one would refer to him as being feather-fisted. Ezzard Chales has a KO percentage of less than 50 percent. So does Lloyd Marshall. Neither of those guys would be considered feather fisted, either.
Beat me to it on Charles, he's my go-to when it comes underrated offensive fighters. I'd love to see his highlight reel if his career was completely on film, it'd be devastating.
Why don't we ask someone who has been in the ring with Mayweather and bear in mind this was at the end of his career...... (starts at 4mins 5 seconds) This content is protected
