Wlad had what was the biggest win of his career in a lineal sense.

Guillermo Jones could have made the top 10, but for a positive test. Despite it being the era of superheavys, Cruiserweights are constantly making an impression on these rankings.

Australian Lucas Browne suprises with a move into the top 10. Looking at his record, he really does seem to be a hell of a lot better than I have ever given him credit for. Very surprising (like others I am sure I have never considered him top 10 at this stage, although maybe he actually was.

Jason Gavern also moving into top 10. As bad as these little aborrations seem, a little sneak peak ahead at records shows that Gavern will lose to the likes of Wilder and Joshua which will presumably allow these guys to move into the top 10. As has happened with these rankings since the 1900s, it really does astonish me how resilient they seem to be, even in todays environment where no one fights each other anymore.

David Haye left the rankings at 11th spot. Not sure if he will reenter on his upcoming comeback but I doubt it.

I am still working through these rankings, but as I finish the top 10, I have to say that I think that this particular year really does look like the worst year ever in terms of quality of fighters. And looking through the current top 40 (not including any new fighters who may earn there way in, I cant really see anyone who can change that opinion). I expect the late teen fighters will have no trouble whatsoever working there way through these guys but we will see.

Wlad does continue to rack up the defences, but some of his choices of opponents really are ridiculously poor.

Junlong Zhang becomes the first chinese fighter to enter the rankings. Looking at his record, it appears as if he is retired, but he is currently an undefeated fighter in arguably the biggest market in the world that every other sport at least is desperate to crack. Given some of the choices that Wlad made as an opponent, it really is astonishing that none of the alphabet organisations, not even the WBU, IBC or whatever othere low level ones exist havent lined him up for a title shot.

Wilder and Joshua and Fury both appearing in the rankings this year.

Oliver McCall was denied a return to the rankings with pre ranked victory over Rokowdi that Rokowdi actually avenged.

Wlad loses his title to the 24th ranked fighter in Tyson Fury. Obviously age played its massive role, and Wlad did have quite a few good defences (plus a few more that were better than these rankings suggest) but it does seem that Tyson Fury was one of his higher ranked challengers.

Fury on the other hand, may be badly penalised by the November date. It means that Technically his break is considered a retirement. On the other hand, he also technically joins a select few, who have retired as World Heavyweight champion. In Tyson's case, it is undefeated World Heavyweight champion. And who knows he may yet do it twice. Maybe on target to become the Greatest ever.

Povetkin is another who has maintained an incredible rating for a long time if he can get a win over one of the big guns at the moment, it could potentially really assist his all time standing.

In tracking the guys who rose to the top in this period, like Joshua, Parker, wilder it seems to be no coincidence that they have a much higher level of activity. Something which seems to be lacking by so many of the others.

Wlad Regathers the mantel this year, with Tyson Fury technically retiring.

I find it pretty amazing that Joshua and Wilder have moved straight into the top 10 and the rankings are again sorting out most of the blips. Even at this early stage, both seem to have faced as many or more top 10 guys as Wlad has.

Full credit to Christian Hammer who fought the traditional fight, defeating the fighter one place above him, in 2 consecutive fights - Sprott and Tepar.

We are really starting to close in on the current rankings. Only a year or two left. Looking at the rankings, you have to say that the cruiserweights are really holding their own, probably not surprising given that the weight limit has been raised to 200lbs.

Full credit to Anthony Joshua. He took out his top 2 contenders plus number 29 and 30 in a single year.

By my count, Anthony Joshua has beaten number 2,3,4,7,8,9. That is 6 of the top 10 and simply astonishing level of dominance. If not for the Ruiz upset, we would have been seeing something really special at the moment. Maybe quite underappreciated to be honest. It will be interesting to see how his career progresses.

Wlad retires at number 2, which is a good end to a good career.

David Haye fails to reenter the rankings with a loss to the 11th ranked fighter.

Eddie chambers retires at number 15. Not a bad effort.

The fight for the Vacant WBA fight was a fight between to fighters not in the top 50, one of which was coming of a 12 month layoff. I think it pretty much sums up modern sanctioning bodies.

Junlong Zhang is gone from the rankings, though technically he could save his ranking by fighting in the next 2 months.

    Allen v Thomas proved a great 26 v 27 matchup, ending in a draw.

James Toney is another presumed retired but capable of saving his ranking if he moves quickly. Nagy Agiolera Krzysztof Zimnoch albert sosnowski Steve Cunningham Manuel Charralso joins this group.

Its very surprising to me that Andy ruiz has come from such a low ranking. Not in the top 57 at the start of the year. This means that technically it is one of the biggest upset champtionship wins of all time.

Thanks for taking the time to put all these rankings together Boilermaker. Its a great concept and I find myself circling back to this thread all the time.

I'd also like to offer a couple of corrections:

1983 - Trevor Berbick is listed with a win over ST Gordon, but Gordon actually pulled that one off. He was cruiserweight champion at the time and returned to that division afterwards but I believe this fight was at the heavyweight limit.

1973 - Jimmy Ellis listed as beating Boone Kirkman, but Kirkman got the decision there. A huge victory for him though Ellis was just about at the end of his road as a top fighter. This one is especially fun because after another win to start 1974 Boone fought Memphis Al Jones (on a 2-17 run) and got KO'd in what has to be one of the great upsets in the history of the division. I'm hoping this means that Memphis Al, who had a 5-20-2 record to begin 1974, will be top 10 at year's end.

Here is the final list for 2019,

Well Done Anthony Joshua a deserved champion and his match with Fury (previous champion) is a legitimate superfight by historical standards.

Mike the bounty hunter jr was unlucky not to work his way into the top 10. I didn’t watch that fight with Povetkin. How did it go down?

Filip Hrgovic made a late run into the top 10. Interesting that his next bout is scheduled for 2021, meaning that he would have had more than a year off by the time of the fight.

Bejanaru has a question mark next to his

It is intereesting that the lower regions of the top 20 are being filled by cruiserweights. I guess this is technically skewing the ratings.

Tyson Fury's non ranking (which will correct itself next year) is an obvious blip in the system. Technically, with fighters so much less active even when at the top of their game, than they used to be in previous years, it is almost as if the 2 year no fight rule to drop out of the rankings may be questionable and need to be extended. Nowadays, it seems like a 3 year MIA is taken in their stride and almost par for the course.

The Boone Kirkman mistake is taking a lot of time to fix up. Records are currently correct up to 1976 with positions 11 being the highest rank change, in 1976. The top 10 held pretty solid in the 70s meaning the system is slow to correct itself.

Not only did Al Jones have a poor record going in, but even after the big win, he still lost to others with mostly poor records. Boone Kirkman actually had a pretty decent record outside the Al Jones loss. It seems to be a massive upset in terms of where the fighteres were at.

1977 has been corrected now. it is interesting looking at these new entries who often fought among each other. One of the surprising features of these rankings for me anyway seemed to be that teh 70s didnt seem to have as much depth or quality as i thought. Old 60s fighters seemed to fight deep into the 70s and be competive. Outside the top 10 or so, i think that it may be a little overated in terms of qualiy.

I just checked the 1978 rankings. The top 31 rankings are correct. Not sure whether or not i will add in the additions that i missed out on ranking or wether i will just delete the four or so remaining records or for the sake of completeness i will add in the missing records, which would probably make 1978 the largest year of rankings i have done.
