About 10 years ago I traced the guy I felt was divisional number 1 throughout history and re reading those thread got me thinking if it's possible to try to trace a P4P number fighter throughout history. Ok here's my crack at the 1800s Dempsey: March 1982 - August 1989 John L Sullivan: August 1889 - October 1890 George Dixon: October 1890 - November 1896 James J Corbett: November 1896 - March 1897 Bob Fitzsimmons: March 1897 - June 1899 Tommy Ryan: June 1899 - Jan 1900 Terry McGovern: Jan 1900 - November 1901 The Ring Mag has these guys listed on the in the year end Mike Tyson: June 1988 - February 1990 Julio Cesar Chavez: February 1990 - September 1993 Pernell Whitaker: September 1993 - November 1996 Roy Jones Jr: November 1996 - March 1997 Pernell Whitaker: March 1997 - April 1997 Oscar De La Hoya: April 1997 - September 1999 Roy Jones Jr: September 1999 - June 2000 Shane Mosley: June 2000 - January 2002 Bernard Hopkins: January 2002 - March 2003 Roy Jones Jr: March 2003 - May 2004 Bernard Hopkins: May 2004 - July 2005 Floyd Mayweather Jr: July 2005 - June 2008 Manny Pacquiao: June 2008 - June 2012 Floyd Mayweather Jr: June 2012 - September 2015 Roman Gonzalez: September 2015 - March 2017 Andre Ward: March 2017 - September 2017 Gennady Golovkin: September 2017 - September 2018 Vasiliy Lomachenko: September 2018 - November 2019 Saul Alvarez: November 2019 - Present Day I hope there aren't any errors there but I haven't proof read it so who knows. The question is, how far back can we go in terms of teaching the P4P number 1?
Term pound for pound was first used to describe best boxers as early as late 1890s or early 1900s, long before SRR.
Wow, what a lineup for the 2010s: Pacquiao, Mayweather, Gonzalez, Ward, Golovkin, Lomachenko, Alvarez. Just goes to show, how great this era is!
It's a strong line-up, but if you did it for each decade I'm not convinced it'd stand out. Interesting idea, a P4P top 10, for each decade.
I agree, but this would present difficulties for guys who were prime between 68-73 or so as an example and miss out or are slighted due to overlaps.
The way I phrased it, was obvoisly meant as a counter to the "yikes" comment. That being said, I actually DO think we're in a decent era. Not claiming it's the best ever - but it's certainly not the worst there has ever been, as some posters like to think.
True, but I was mostly meaning in terms of comparing eras. Honestly I wasn't thinking about that, fair enough

Marvelous Marvin Hagler was the pound for pound king for most of early 80s .... Duran was pound for pound after Montreal
