Shows that a good technican could outbox him. BTW I think he ko's Walcott, I don't see him outboxing him.
Tough match up to call. Walcott would retreat setting traps, he was cute but not superquick. I view it as Schmeling vs Sharkey two - with more angles shown to Max and a far more dangerous puncher. However, Max had a lethal right and was a dogged pursuer, and Walcott's chin was shaky for top level fighter. Max I think hurts him at some point and slowly puts him away
Max's better footwork gets him into position often, leading to KD's. Maybe not a stoppage but an advantage on the cards in the end.
I can see Walcott make Max guessing and making it counter punching battle but if the KD happens, I wouldn't give Joe much chance to last the fight. Walcott's chin is questionable and Max power is not.
Triangle theories rarely work. There's also the fact that Louis destroyed Max in the rematch and arguably was beaten first time out by Walcott. Jersey is on a very similar level to Max imo, just slightly better in most categories.
Schmeling had definitely a better chin. He had better counter right. He had better jab in my opinion. He had higher workrate (although it's not always an advantage). I like his defense more, he wasn't countered nearly as often. He was stronger puncher who stopped more elite opponents. Schmeling had many advantages over Walcott in opinion.
IMO, it's like this: Walcott's advantages: Head-movement, counters, foot-work, speed, feints, size and strength. Schmeling's: Ring IQ/Generalship, jab, workrate, power and chin. Yeah, slight edge to Schmeling IMO. Schmeling has the most important advantage though (obviously my opinion) and that's ring IQ. Speed is the second most important advantage, but Ring IQ makes the difference here since it's likely going to be a chess-match.
For all we know the Louis that destroyed Schmeling, might have done the same to Walcott. The Louis that Walcott fought, was nowhere near to either version that Schmeling fought, so even if Walcott had won a narrow decision, it still wouldn't point to him being better than Schmeling.
Now that's a weird question. I think I'll go Walcott based on familiarity but it's a toss up IMO. I don't see it being a big factor though, I imagine this fight takes place at long and mid-range.
