It would kill his strength. He would lose to bums.

Have you ever had to cut water weight like this? I have. It is murder.

No you cannot say the same thing for Ali, Norton, or some of the other 70's heavyweights. In the clip above Norton said his walk around weight was 230. He and Ali were 6'3. For the 2nd fight, Muhammad Ali 212 lbs Ken Norton 205 and they were both absolutely shredded with hardly an ounce of fat and exchanged furiously for 12 rounds without gasping for air or becoming sluggish, which shows they were in tip top shape. In other words they had already cut a good 20+ lbs.

If Norton looked like a Greek statue at 205 after an intense gruelling training camp with no fat, he would look like a starving emaciated refugee at 168.

The part many of you aren't getting (or refusing to get) is that Marciano quite clearly A) still had some fat to him even at his best weight B) had a high calorie diet and C) didn't cut water. If the starting point for Rocky is in shape at 185 lbs and the 3 above mentioned points are true, then you cannot compare it to a fighter like Norton whose in shape starting point is 205 and who was absolutely shredded with no fat and a very strict diet. They aren't remotely the same case.

Depends on how much water weight.

I have personally experimented with things like the military diet, the 1000 calories diet, etc all while sitting on my ass and doing no exercise and lost as much as 8 lbs in 2 days. When I did start exercising while doing these diets, i went down from a bloated 240 to 206 in 3 months.

When i was training with my boxing coach, he had me wearing a garbage bag under my hoodie to shed the water weight. Do that while jogging and hitting the heavy bag and you'll get good results even without gruelling Spartan training or starvation.

Mind You I am by no means a nutrition/dieting expert or some elite professional fighter or coach yet I was able to achieve major weight loss in a short time frame without looking like a skeleton or feeling weak. So the idea Rocky couldn't drop another 10-15 lbs of water weight without killing his strength and would end up "losing to bums" is illogical.

And again, I can only speak from experience. It would have killed him.

God no. Do you follow boxing today? Just about every boxer today cuts at least 5% of their body weight in water. 8-10% is probably quite standard Those that cut much cut closer to 15%.

Rocky would only have to cut something like 6%. That's routine today. He'd be absolutely fine.

I think Beterbiev is something like 185-190 lbs in the ring. He said something to that effect when talking about a possible meet with Usyk.

Kova is probably around 190 at least, since Canelo put in that 185 lbs rehydration clause.

Yarde is certainly one of the bigger in the division. Don't know how big, but he looked substantially heavier than Kova, so probably around 200 lbs.

I agree up to a point. Marciano could, and would have the will, to cut even to 160lbs with a McGregor style water cut. However, I think below 175lbs his effectiveness would be more limited. Marciano was, in his best shape, pretty trim and extremely fit, and he was a stocky man with a well built skeletal structure (from what I have seen from pics and the words of the Mike Stanton book). 175 would suit him today as it would allow him to cut like others, but also wouldn't hamper that rare combo of extreme stamina and big power of his. He would imo, with modern career starts, fight at 168 or even 160 to a point before quickly moving to 175. I wouldn't pick any LHW today over Marciano.

In fact, thinking of this makes me appreciate Marciano as a P4P fighter quite a bit more.

Also, side note, does anyone know what Julio Cesar Martinez re-hydrates to? He has looked visibly smaller than every single Flyweight he has fought, yet is an absolute bull and extremely explosive and powerful.

    Rocky,
    wasn't really that stocky.
    It's kind of cocky,
to say they're smaller than Rocky.

    Rocky could score the KO,
    if he cut the mayo.
    Put down the glass,
    and sweated his ass.

    Don't eat that cake,
    it would be a mistake.
    Pasta and meatballs,
    are Rocko's biggest pitfalls.

    Take some vitamin C,
    have a Blockbuster pee.
    That would be the difference,
    for ye olde Rocky.

Jacobs cuts around 20 lbs to make 160 and has done so for years. I don't know the exact numbers, but Margarito looked absolutely huge even at 154, so he probably cut around 15% of his body weight for much of his career.

But in general it seems that fighters don't have the discipline to cut as much as 15% over their whole careers. Pac moved up, of course, so did Williams and Clottey. Geale stuck around MW until his last fight, though.

10 lbs of water weight would not kill a malnourished old man, let alone a world class athlete.
