Thought's on Mina? I don't think there's an overwhelming amount of footage out there of him, which is a little depressing.

Mina seems to of been immensely popular, drawing crowds of 30,000+ back home in Peru. Even while travelling to Madison Square Garden he had a sizable entourage who had traveled to support from, from Peru... and this was back in the early 60's! Pretty remarkable.

Not many Peruvian boxers, are there? I guess it's not a big sport in that country.
No Peruvian baseball players, either while there are many Venezuelan ball players.

Very entertaining fight Rus. Very similar styles. I always like a HH fight and this guy is like a less flamboyant and tighter version. Thanks 4 posting

"El Expreso de Chincha" /"Bombardero de Chincha"

Mina (42-2-2) beat a very young Bob Foster (11-1) at Lt Heavy.

"Mauro Mina had become one of the best light heavyweights in the world by fighting exclusively in South America. Just one more obstacle stood between him and international stardom. He continued boxing and winning during the 60s in fights against Gregorio "Goyo" Peralta, Freddie Mack, Sugar Boy Nando, Guillermo Dutschmann, Henry Hank, Eddie Cotton all of which he won. He also won a fight against future champion Bob Foster, in 1963.

In 1962, after defeating Eddie Cotton by decision in 10 rounds in Lima, he had been ranked the number one contender by the prestigious Ring Magazine. He was ready for a shot at the Light Heavyweight title held by Harold Johnson but the discovery of a retinal injury acquired in one of his previous fights (allegedly against Cuban Lino Rendon) prevented such challenge from ever taking place. Guess the real question would be: "Would a healthy Mina had beaten Harold Johnson in a Ltheavy Title fight?".

And could he have beaten Bob Foster in a rematch? What made Bob go down to Peru is another question for another time.

My recollection after watching the Mina-Hank fight ten years ago or so is that Mina was trying to show the New York reporters what a good boxer he was and in so doing he lost the first four rounds. Then, he seemed to realize he was losing so he totally turned his style around and turned the fight into more of a slugfest and won the remaining rounds. In other words, when he couldn't beat Hank by boxing, he took it to Hank and beat him at his own game, which is the mark of a really good fighter. For those who have watched the fight recently, is this a fair assessment?

Kas, I scored this a while back. Here is how I had it.

    NY rounds basis in scoring.

    Round 1: Hank
    Round 2: Hank
    Round 3: Mina
    Round 4: Hank
Round 5: Mina (great round, could have been fought in a phone booth)
    Round 6: Mina
    Round 7: Mina
    Round 8: Even
Round 9: Even (very little of substance took place this round - you could give to Mina on aggression but I said even)
    Round 10: Mina

    Total 5-3-2 Mina

I was so impressed with Mina's jab and short hooks inside. Don't know the story on this guy. Retired in '65 at the top of his game. This was his only fight in the U.S. MSG seemed to be impressed with him but he went back down to Peru and finished his career without a title shot. He should have pressed this and stayed in NY. You have to go where the money and opportunities are. Maybe just bad management.

I also looked around at anyone who scored this and I found two more posters that scored it 5-3-2 Mina, one who scored it 6-4 Mina, one who scored it 5-4-1 for Hank and the last one scored it a 5-5 Draw. So, a good tight fight.

Good post once again scar. Here's how I had it.

    Henry Hank vs Mauro Mina

    Hank - Mina

    R1: 10 - 9
    Hank forcing the action.
    R2: 10 - 9
Heating up now. Heavy punches from Hank.
    R3: 9 - 10
Mina working in. Brilliant defense from both.
    R4: 10 - 9
    Strong offense from Hank.
    R5: 9 - 10
Pure phone booth round! Mina using his strength.
    R6: 9 - 10
Mina tighter. Hank not doing as much.
    R7: 9 - 10
Mina forcing the issue; is more effective.
    R8: 10 - 10
As close a round as you'll see in a Boxing ring!
    R9: 10 - 9
Close round. Hank on his feet.
    R10: 9 - 10
    Mina aggressive again. Nice finale.

TOTAL: 96 - 95 MINA (FIVE ROUNDS TO FOUR, ONE EVEN)

    Notes:
    • Wow, Arthur Mercante looks young!
    • Both men with similar styles. Mina is tighter and stronger, Hank is wilder and heavier handed.
    • Good, tight action throughout.

yeah, I watched it a year or 2 ago, but either didn’t score it or can’t find my card. I might need to revisit this one as there is not much out there on Mina.

From what I remember he looked pretty good. Shame there's little on him. Had he fought an old Moore, he very well may have won.
