Cleveland Williams gets a lot of mileage on this site, and his record doesn't warrant it. Satterfield stopped him, Liston stopped him twice, Terrell decisioned him after losing to him the first time, and Machen and him drew. That's all before the infamous shooting which gives Williams a complete pass on all his post performances of that incident. I'm not saying he was horrible but to me he was similar to Briggs a highly muscled fighter, reputed to be a big puncher that routinely came up short against good competition but gets extra support because they went down swinging against better opponents like Lewis and Liston.
and Chuvalo is overrated too. DeJohn, Summerlin, Bethea, Cleroux never get a mention here but were of the same class while superior fighters to Williams or Chuvalo such as Folley and Machen are rarely mentioned. Are they even better than Peralta?
Please show me where anyone in this thread is giving Williams "unwarranted mileage". I seem to have missed it.
I didn't say this thread, I said this site. He gets discussed often and often seems to be over valued.
OK So, if you didn't see anything you perceive to be unwarranted praise for Williams here, what exactly is your purpose in this thread?
Late TKO similar to the Foreman fight in which the referee saves a battered and game but over matched Chuvalo. Afterwards, Chuvalo swears that he "had Williams exactly where I wanted him" and that the ref stopped the fight prematurely.
I have had the fight for many years, but dont watch it anymore. It is a very sad sight for Cleveland Williams fans (including myself)
That's ridiculous, Williams never stopped any good fighter let alone someone with granite chin like Chuvalo.
