The Rules are simple. pick the top 15 fighters from 1940 -1949. All fighter rankings are based on the lineal system ie to earn the rank you have to beat a ranked fighter. A fighter is ranked at the end of each year based solely on who they beat and official scorecards. Newspaper decsions count as a draw. Only official decisions count. All fights count, regardless of actual weight of opponents. I have used a staggered points system where fighters earn 100 points for a number 1 ranking with each place being worth less (and the drop being weighted towards the top). For the sake of competition between posters, unless someone has a better idea, 1 point for picking a fighter in the top 15 and 2 bonus points for picking a fighter in the top 10. Posters are welcome to keep their own scores, the official top 15 will eventually be posted on the lineal rankings thread, and if there is enough interest i will eventually do all of the decades, so feel free to make early predictions and votes. The results will probably come out before most people vote, so the honour system is in place and we will use the honour system and trust voters to not cheat and check results before posting.
Below was my Guess, though it was a lot harder than i thought and after number 7 i cheated a bit by sneaking a look at Joe Louis' record. 1 Joe Louis 2 Joe Bivins 3 Joe Walcott 4 Billy Conn 5 Ezzard Charles 6 Billy Conn 7 Max Baer 8 Arturo Godoy 9 John Henry Lewis 10 Tami Maruiello 11 Lou Nova 12 Buddy Baer 13 Abe Simon 14 John Henry Lewis 15 Max Schmelling
15. Fritzie Zivic 14. Beau Jack 13. Cocoa Kid 12. Billy Conn 11. Archie Moore 10. Jake LaMotta 9. Charley Burley 8. Holman Williams 7. Rocky Graziano 6. Ezzard Charles 5. Joe Louis 4. Ike Williams 3. Tony Zale 2. Willie Pep 1. Sugar Ray Robinson As much as Jersey Joe Walcott is one of my favorites, I couldn't fit him in the top 15. He's number 16.
I'm sorry, I don't think I get the OP. However, my top 15 from the 40s would be: #15. Sammy Angott #14. Lloyd Marshall #13. Manuel Ortiz #12. Beau Jack #11. Jake LaMotta #10. Jimmy Bivins #9. Cocoa Kid #8. Archie Moore #7. Ike Williams #6. Charley Burley #5. Holman Williams #4. Joe Louis #3. Willie Pep #2. Sugar Ray Robinson #1. Ezzard Charles Guys like Saddler, Conn, Gavilan, Zivic and to a lesser extent Louis did better work in other decades, and their best spanned between the two.
Not really sure I understand the OP either, and I'm not clear if we're supposed to be doing this by division. But this is my top 15 P4P for the decade. 1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Ezzard Charles 3. Willie Pep 4. Joe Louis 5. Archie Moore 6. Charley Burley 7. Sandy Saddler 8. Holman Williams 9. Jimmy Bivins 10. Ike Williams 11. Kid Gavilan 12. Lloyd Marshall 13. Jake LaMotta 14. Manuel Ortiz 15. Fritzie Zivic
It is heavyweights only. Sorry for not being clear. It is based off lineal rankings. ie who actually beat who. In simple terms pick the best 15 heavyweights of the decade and see how it performs to how they actually performed in the rankings over this time period. if that makes sense.
