Does Weight Training Slow Boxers Down? Probably a little bit

    The idea that weight training will slow down has been discussed in boxing circles since at least the 60's and probably before that.

    In recent years this idea has become discredited, not entirely sure why as I've never seen a really good conclusive argument.

    Meanwhile in the last decade the sport science community have been making strides in their ability to analyse muscle fibers.

    They now realise that muscle fibers respond far more to training than previously thought. A number of studies have been carried out that show a gradual decrease in the number of Type IIX ultra fast twitch muscle fibres in response to weight training.

    Video here going through the studies;

    Depends on a few things...

    What style of lifting is the Boxer doing?

    What are the Boxers best attributes prior to slowing down from weights?

    Where was the Boxer in their career?

    Higher reps and light weights add speed. I'm talking 50-150 reps. That's my experience.

    Don't forget to stretch before, and after your weight lifting.

    I have lightning fast hands at 43...but i had them at 23 too....just my experience...nothing slows handspeed like overbulky chest muscles and quads....just my personal opinion. ...other exercises like shoulder presses and biceps ones id argue help maximise ur snap

    I enjoy doing high rep training, with lighter weights. Maybe not to that extreme, but 15 reps with moderate weights really do slim you out and improve your mood and conditioning. Nothing beats the muscle tightness you feel in your arms and chest. Lean muscular is always better than bulky muscular in my opinion.

    Im not a boxer but heres my 2c worth. Some people recommend that you dont whereas some do,i think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Judicious lifting at all rep ranges will add something in my opinion but i recommend finding a qualified strength and conditioning coach who can point you in the right direction.

    Would have sworn against it in the past. As my body has gotten a little older the bodies response to various weight lifting has given me an extra gear in boxing training. More feel and strength. I wish I'd done it sooner to be honest. Of course the exercises are functional, explosive and various rep ranges. By the way I am no expert I just do what works for me.
