How do you see a round robin between these 3 MW fighters pan out in 1992.

All 3 were top 10 MW fighters at this point and all 3 were essentially unbeaten.

They were all about to achieve arguably their best victories against Barkley, Jackson and Hopkins.

My current line of thinking right now is that

    Jones beats Toney
    Toney beats McClellan
    McClellan beats Jones

But I'm not fully set in stone.

As an aside, how stacked is the 1992 ring top ten: Jackson, Toney, Johnson, Jones, McCallum, Kalambay, McClellan, Parks, Hopkins, Tate.

    What a year.

But this thread only looks at 3 fighters from this year.

    Jones vs McClellan
    Jones vs Toney
    Toney vs McClellan

    What say you?

The only fight in question is Jones-McClellan because clearly McClellan has a punches chance. Toney looked like he made light work of McClellan in sparring. McClellan's weakness is his defense and stamina. Outside of rounds 1 and 8, Nigel Benn won every round against him. Obviously far quicker more skilled boxer than Benn and has more power too.

Jones was also an equally devastating puncher at 160-168 who has a far superior defense and speed to McClellan. Jones would land his power shots first. My only question if Jones takes an aggressive approach like against powerpuncher Merqui Sosa or if he boxes more conservatively.

The question for me is if McClellan is able to take enough of Jones shots to land his own.

As for Jones fighting conservatively, having the stamina to run from G-Man for 12 rounds isn't something I'm sold on.

Jones would have made Mclellan look like an amateur.

That's ironic actually because when they did fight as amateurs G-Man came out on top.

Shame the fight never happened in the pro ranks. It's widely believed Jones ducked G-Man but I don't know the ins and outs.

I happen to agree. I personally believe McClellan was overrated.

Jones v Toney is a almost carbon copy of the actual fight they had, with Roy handling him easy.
Jones survives a absolute blasting from McClellan, to stop him in 9.
McClellan V Toney is a taut, on your edge of your seat fight with James being hurt and rocked like never before, but somehow holds on to stop the G-man in 11.

No it didn't happen in the pro ranks, correct.
    Pryor beat Hearns.
    What was your point again?
Who is considered the ATG in several weight classes and which was a bum who was ended by Nigel Benn?

    Very plausible.

With the speed of Jones it's very easy to picture him pot shotting from range and G-Man not being able to ever do anything about it.

But I can't get the picture out of my head of Jones being up against the ropes and eating an overhand right dropping for the count.

My point is its a shame the fight never happened in the pro ranks.

I thought I made that clear?

It isn't a shame, Roy would have embarrased him.

I think Toney will always struggle with the style of Jones tbh.

Now there's a thought, G-Man has even more questionable stamina than Jones. So if Jones can survive the times he's against the ropes, we could see a repeat of Ali vs Foreman.

I think Toney beats him. He has the chin to take his shots and is better infighting.

Ironically enough when they fought as amateurs G-Man actually beat Jones.

It's a shame the fight never occurred in the pro ranks as they spent a coup le of years as arguably the best MW fighters in a world and surely anyone wants to see the best face each other.

Agreed. But the 92 version of Jones didn't really spend too much time up against the ropes. In those days, his elusiveness, reflexes and footspeed were beyond elite.
