Did GGG struggle vs Canelo because he was past his prime or was Canelo just the best guy he faced

I mean the fight before vs Daniel Jacobs was the first elite middleweight he faced and he barley won

It's obvious to anybody that has watched a lot of Golovkin that he's slowed down a lot lately. He was never the fastest middleweight but you can clearly see a difference in speed from, say, five years ago. Being slower against a speedster like Canelo is a very bad thing. Obviously being ~36 after a long career is going to wear you down. Hagler was like 32 when he retired, clearly deteriorated, for a comparison.

I think it is fair to say a bit of both.

Like everyone has already said, a bit of both although I will say it was because Canelo was the better fighter in the second fight more.

Who knows? He had an easy time with a bunch of unknowns. Then look ordinary against Jacobs, Canelo and Derevyanchenko. Shame we didn't get to see what he was made of in his prime.

You can't ignore the age factor, but Golovkin swears he feels like a young man. I think it is styles and caliber of apponents. These top guys, Jacobs, and Canelo were fighting the fights of their lives. Jacobs was out weighing GGG by 10 to 15 lbs and Canelo was a much improved fighter coming up in weight. That being said, I believe GGG won all three of those fights. I thought he looked good and focused against Jacobs throughout the whole fight. I thought he out boxed Canelo twice, once going forward, and the second fight by out boxing Canelo in the center ring. The 2nd Canelo fight Golovkin was pushed to the limit against an almost super human effort by Canelo and still found a way to prevail like a true champ only to be robbed by the system. GGG is now fighting under a new trainer and I don't think he has been completely dialed in yet in his last couple fights, so right now I think he is a little more vulnerable.

A bit of both Golovkin was already a bit past prime in 2017 with age 35. I think GGG was at his peak from 2009 until 2014/2015 but Jacobs and Canelo were his best opponents too.

Well he won both fights, but GGG was clearly past his prime.
