Did GGG struggle vs Canelo because he was past his prime or was Canelo just the best guy he faced

GGG beat Canelo twice. The second time was close but GGG was on the downhill slope and Canelo was roided. That's boxing politics and time.

GGG took very little punishment throughout his career. I think it's pretty convenient for his fans to claim he started declining as soon as he started facing good fighters but I think an argument can be made that maybe just maybe he wasn't as good as we were told. He stayed in his lane and reigned over a very weak era for middle weight and chose not to chase any challenges

It was a very weak era for sure. To me it seams like he started to get a little name recognition at the same time he started to decline and wanted to protect that. I am not sure we can know how good he was.

I think GGG and Canelo were about even. Canelo has always been very hard to beat. He's not a slick boxer nor is he a huge puncher, so he does end up in quite a few close fights. But he usually finds a way to win. Definitely one of the best chins I've seen in my years following the sport. That plus his skills were enough to put him neck and neck with GGG.
