Favorite Fights where the old man beats the young guy?

That's one of my favorite fights of all time. I know it sounds crazy, but it has everything. Outfighting, infighting, brawling. Larry's strategy is as unorthodox as it gets. I generally don't hold Larry up as one of the greatest ring technicians of all time, but the plan he used against Mercer was stupidly brilliant.

 

Holyfield over Tyson .. Evander was considered so shot going in people were afraid he'd get killed ..

 

That one is definitely a question of perception rather than actual age - Holyfield was 34 and Tyson was 30 - but like you say, Holyfield was considered much older and past it whereas many people thought Tyson was back to his best like he was 20 all over again.

 

One of the most love is blind parts of that is how people couldn't see that Mike had changed so much since his late 80s heyday. In some ways that weren't obvious true...in other ways, yeah. He wasn't the same fighter who steamrolled Spinks, who made a ring invalid out of Berbick. He wasn't as good. Period. One of the best in world, sure. Not Holy or Lewis level, no.

That is EXACTLY what I thought was going to happen. I was in Limerick, Ireland watching the 2nd Collins Benn fight in Punch's bar which occurred the same night as Holy Tyson 1. The next morning, while I was nursing a hangover, my buddy's da told me the Holy result and I was in shock at that

that's what I was thinking the whole time. Plus he had already bounced back with Norton and Frazier rematches, it wasn't like he was totally washed-up at this point, just a slight underdog

 

That's revisionist .. Coming into the fight Tyson had four post prison comeback fights and had destroyed Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon. He looked terrific against Bruno .. Seldon went out so quick it was devastating .. Coming into the fight Holyfield had been knocked out in a fight by Bowe in a fight where he ran out of gas so completely he looked the definition of shot and looked horrific against a pudgy, blown up light heavyweight Czyz .. people really feared for his life and / or felt bad for the beating he was sure to take, much like they did in Ali in Zaire against Foreman .. it's not that Tyson was shiot at all .. it's that he was mentally weak and over confident and Evander had the heart and chin to stand up to him ,,
