Calling him a crude slugger is underrating some of his more subtle skills I think is what the op is getting at
George Foreman is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. His first career he is generally regarded as a slugger with huge punching and physical power. But in reality he had a tremendous jab, devastating uppercuts, and cut the ring off rather nicely. He had very good fundamentals and new how to set people up. His second career saw him much more patient, using that pole axe of a jab, right cross, uppercuts, and his cross armed defense. George is one of my all time favorites, and one of the toughest guys to EVER do it.
Foreman had a ton of skill, but because of his natural strength rarely needed to use it and like a lot of punchers often over relied on his power. In his comeback he was forced to rely on his skill set more.
His ability isn't underrated as clearly he's probably in everyone's top 10 list. But people who see him as just a big guy with power who slugged and brawled underrate his actual skills and technique. Nobody achieves what he did by simply being big, strong and powerful. Foreman did a lot of clever and subtle things in the ring that only a real student of the art of boxing would pick up on.
When he teamed up with Archie Moore his ring intellect was seriously impressive. Everything was thought through. Very little energy and punches were wasted.
Agree with this. In his prime he relied on his physicality to steamroll his opponents. In his comeback he had to box his way to victory and I liked his unflappable calmness under fire. It's like he had all the time in the world and that he knew he was going to land big and KO the other guy.
The way Foreman threw his punches was so unique. Very methodical puncher that just seemed to be able to land somehow.
Never forget how He disposed of a Prime Farzier....Destroyed him with Ease.!!! This content is protected
