Thurman was done after that shoulder injury not been the same since, it’s a good win though especially because of his age but not even close Mayweather > canelo
The Canelo win is certainly the better win on paper. But like you said, Pac's age, the catchweight, the draining of Canelo, just the fact that Canelo wasn't allowed to be at 100% because Mayweather was too scared to fight him straight up at the normal 154. Instead Mayweather had to pull some A-side BS in order to agree to fight Canelo, well given that, I don't see how you could say a win under such dubious circumstances could be better than a win straight up on an even playing field like Pac-Man's win over Thurman. Canelo's promoter ended up in rehab during fight week for goodness sake. So on top of the catchweight and all the other Mayweather advantages that comes with fighting Mayweather in Vegas, Canelo had to fight Mayweather drained, on Mayweather's terms and without even his promoter present during fight week. If that doesn't scream being at a huge disadvantage I don't know what does. So we all agree that Canelo is the bigger win on paper, but Mayweather was only able to defeat Canelo due to under-handed A-side tactics, and that is why it can't be compared to Pacquiao in his 40s beating Thurman straight up with none of that kind of A-side BS that Mayweather needed to beat Canelo. Then on top of this you subscribe to this idea that Mayweather cruised through the fight with Canelo which is not what happened at all. Mayweather was feinted out of his mind, Mayweather got Canelo in a headlock in the 4th round, cranked his neck, Mayweather was schooled on how to fight on the ropes in the 10th, Mayweather was getting booed by his own hometown crowd for stalling in the 12th. Come on kirk, you're better than this. The judges had it 116-112, 117-111, 114-114 in Mayweather's home town. Those are closer scores and more rounds won vs Mayweather than anyone Mayweather fought since DLH. (and DLH did not deserve those scores imho, Canelo did much better vs Mayweather) We don't have to agree on everything, and I agree with most of what you're saying kirk, but to claim that Mayweather cruised through the fight with Canelo is laughable. Mayweather was taken to his absolute limit by Canelo and he barely eeked out a decision after stacking the deck against Canelo. He barely won, and with the kind of advantages he had, he should have dominated Canelo. He didn't, Canelo fought him tooth and nail.
Pacquiao was the favorite at -145. Mayweather was the favorite at -280. Not saying the odds on the night of the fight say which win is better, but just some additional info for you all.
Thurman was just looking for a last paycheck and hasn’t fought again. On the other hand, Alvarez has gone on to be a pfp best. Alvarez is clearly the better win. No contest in my mind.
On Paper, but at least it was a legitimate win unlike Mayweather Canelo. At least Pacquiao didn't pull some A-side shenanigans and drain Thurman and fight him at a catchweight like he did Cotto.
lol Alvarez weighed- in exactly one pound less that in his previous fight. I didn’t see you complaining about “Camelo-weight” when he was fighting at 155.
Canelo went on to build a future HOF career, Thurman never will be a HOF'er. Pacquiao was old when he fought Thurman, but who really is Thurman? I don't rate him at all. I just want Pac to either fight Loma or retire. He has othing left to prove.
Two completely different things. No one was drained when Canelo was fighting at "Caneloweight" / 155 a lb above SMW in non-title fights. Canelo Mayweather was a 154-lb Unification Title Match. That's completely different.
That's actually a good question. I'll have to think about that. Canelo pros: -Went on to be top rated P4P for years -Had a significant size advantage -Had just come off the biggest win of his career -Canelo barely won a round -36 vs 23 = 13 year age difference Canelo cons: -The Catchweight -His best win was sliding past Austin Trout Thurman pros: -Thurman was a top welterweight with wins over Porter and Garcia -Pacquiao was 40 to Thurman's 30, a ten year difference but overall older than Floyd was by 4 years -Thurman was naturally a little bigger than Pac Thurman cons: -Thurman had been inactive for years and looked shaky against Josesito -Thurman never reached the P4P heights Canelo did -The fight was quite close and could have gone either way ****. I don't know.
Two things 1) Mayweather won very clearly against Canelo 2) The Canelo who Mayweather beat is far superior to the Thurman who Pacquiao beat
Was he far superior? I mean overall Canelo is the higher P4P talent years later, but despite a shaky showing against Lopez, Thurman was already a seasoned fighter who had beaten legitimate champions. Canelo had snuck by Trout and not much else.
Beating Trout, Angulo and Lara, establishing himself the clear number 1 in the division. Yes far superior.
Angulo was shot to smithereens. Lara and Trout were razor close fights. MANY people had Lara outright winning and many people had Trout a draw or either way.
