When did boxing first have ring girls?

Great and interesting question. It is probably a tradition that needs to stop. Thoughts?

I don't think ring girls became the norm until the mid 70s.

 

The earliest Ive seen of ring card girls was at the old Silver Slipper Las Vegas (or Strip) Fight of the Week promoted by Bill Miller. Those shows were syndicated and shown all over the country for a few years. Miller used attractive ring card girls (including his wife) and had interviews with celebrities between rounds. Sometimes the celebrities would sit in and provide color commentary, Robert Goulet is a frequent guest. I believe it was these shows that resulted in ring card girls becoming the norm.

 

The Ring Card Girl contests at the Great Western Forum shows in the 1990s were probably the pinnacle. It was a thong party. (LOL)

Also a highlight was when Boxing After Dark was introduced, and Jim Lampley would do a voiceover during the open while Ring Girls checked their skimpy outfits. (Jim, always the company man.)

I've always found the tradition interesting. I remember the round card girls for the Tarver-Reggie Johnson show were handing out free passes to the strip club where they worked to everyone between rounds. That seemed to cross the line.

I believe Ali met Veronica Porshe (Laila Ali's mom) when she was assigned to be a round card girl at Ali-Foreman. She spent most of the time trying to fend off James Brown (the singer).

 

See. Things like this give you away. Just like when you answered the "was everyone shocked by Liston-Ali"". You are no where near 17. Just admit it instead of carrying on this bizarre charade. You will be respected more.
