Chavez Sr. I was never as impressed by Toney as other people were.

Chavez's record comfortably outstrips Toney's, which is the name of the game. Toney put it together in spurts, particularly 1991-94. During those years he produced form as good as anything Chavez did, and was arguably a greater all-round or natural talent (I'll stress again - arguably).

But what Toney strung together for a couple of years here or there, Chavez put together for a dozen years consecutively. Consistently putting in exemplary performances against high class opposition, without any embarrassing slip ups - the kind Toney was sometimes prone to.

I'm a far greater fan of Toney than I am of Chavez, but no doubt about who should be remembered as the greater of the pair.

Chavez. He was much more industrious and consistent. His achievements are higher

James Toney. I got paying work to do ATM but I'd argue it to death.

    Really good question.

The default answer is Chavez, but Toney makes a very strong argument and, at times, convinces me.

Chavez was clearly the best LW and LWW in the world during his reigns there. Arguably the number 1 SFW as well. He spent a decade being the best at what he did. That's some going. He picked up a raft of quality victories as well.

Toney was the best MW in the world and arguably the best SMW and CW during his tenures there. He has some good victories but some poor performances also. But from 91 to 2006 he would give anyone in his division a tough night (bar Jones obvs)

    It's hard to call.

For me I think Chavez was better as a champion, better skilled and has a better resume.

But there isn't a lot in it and if anyone disagrees I'm perfectly OK with that.

There comes a time in every man's life when he realises that every man dies but not every man truly-well and truly-really lives. That time, for you, could be now.

I can see the flaws in both but the overall dominance is with Chavez. Both guys benefited from being really active. They both achieved that old school level out of having so many fights. The ability of being an old head on younger shoulders that cannot be achieved anymore. In comparison to Chavez, I think Toney wasted periods of his career where he just was not training. He exploited the value his experience knowing that he could get through fights he should be winning easier. In this respect Chavez was always better value. However, both were real masters of what they did.

Toney was too inconsistent for me. Skilled as hell but was the ultimate underachiever. He probably was more skilled. Emphasis on probably. But JCC was definitely the better fighter. Punishing puncher, good defense, hard jab, durable as that come and always in condition.

Toney was more talented and more skilled, but Chavez had greater career because he had much more dedication to boxing comparing to Toney

Two of my favorites ...but it’s Chavez ...he has the better resume ...and I’m not sure if Toney is really more talented....both are extremely skilled warriors
